This article will show you how to remove the instrument cluster in your BMW e30. This was done 02.23.06 by me on my 1990 325i with airbag - I did not remove the steering wheel.

I'll show you this in 7 steps.

Tools required:
8mm socket
10mm socket
socket wrench
philips (+) head screwdriver

Time: 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours.

1. Remove the 3 screws from the section below the steering wheel (where your knees are)

2. Remove the 4 8mm screws from the panel behind the one you just removed - pull it toward you and down, remove the 2 harnesses for the door chime (they only go in one way each, so you can't confuse them to reinstall)

3. Remove the 2 10mm screws on the left side of this panel, and the 3 on the opposite side, closest to the radio. Move this section away from your work area.

4. Once this section is removed, you will look under the dash now - you will see one of these silver knobs on each side of the cluster, these hold in the front facia below the cluster. They are hand tight, so go ahead and remove both.

5. Once this front facia is removed, you will then see screws lining the bottom section of the instrument cluster (somebody was here before me, hence, there were only 2 - I believe there are 4 here to remove.

6. Remove the 2 screws in the center of the instrument cluster after removing the screws from the bottom of the cluster. Once you get this out, then you will see 2 more screws behind that - and once you remove those 2 screws, you can pivot the cluster with the bottom facing you.

7. Replace affected bulbs. Part number for standard lights (entire bottom row of lights on the cluster) is 62 13 1 383 311 - Part number for the turn signal indicators is 62 11 1 391 260. I have not found the part numbers for the main instruments, the speedometer/fuel and tach/temp - I have one bad, but cannot find the replacement yet, so I will be pulling my cluster out once again when I get the right bulb - next week

If you want to get the best price on these bulbs, they cost LESS THAN $1.00 EACH.  If you are in the Orlando area, call K&K Auto Parts on Tiner Avenue and Oak Ridge Road, 407.851.6430.
