On the new BMW K 1200 R through Monte Carlo: Jacques Villeneuve discovers his passion for BMW Motorrad Munich. Jacques Villeneuve was provided with a new BMW K 1200 R by BMW Motorrad during the Formula 1 weekend in Monte Carlo. Although the experienced BMW Sauber F1 Team driver usually opts for PS power on four wheels, the BMW K 1200 R made him discover a love of BMW motorcycles too.
The 35-year-old Canadian was particularly impressed by the power and conceptual strength of this purist high-performance roadster. "The first impression was of course the sheer power. The machine is amazingly fast but smooth at the same time. You feel safe, everything is well thought out." The former World Champion was also enthusiastic about the handling of the BMW K 1200 R: "Although it's a big bike, you get around in city traffic very easily and it's easy to handle on winding roads - it's just like riding a very light bike."
So it was hardly surprising that Villeneuve got on his new BMW K 1200 R in the evening instead of taking the BMW 7 Series shuttle to the dinner in Cap Estel. Villeneuve: "I felt sorry for the driver who was due to collect me and I apologised when I saw him later on that evening. But he saw my broad grin and I think he understood…"
With163 bhp (120 kW), the BMW K 1200 R is currently the fastest naked bike in the world. It was launched in mid-2005. In terms of acceleration to 100 km/h, the K1200 R can even match the Formula 1 cars. If necessary, it can get up to 100 km/h in 2.8 sec.
The BMW K 1200 R is equally impressive when it comes to braking. The brakes - fitted with ABS of course - achieve optimum deceleration and are among the best on the market in terms of brake performance.
