Sebring, Florida: (March 15, 2006):
BimmerWorld driver Seth Thomas, of Cumming Georgia, was 8th fastest overall in the 35 car field with James Clay, of Blacksburg, Virginia, 12th and Menlo
Park California rookie Paul Goldman driving in his first World Challenge Touring Car competition was a credible 24th after missing half of the second session due to minor contact with the wall.
“I’m happy with that,” Seth Thomas said of his afternoon session in his #38
BimmerWorld BMW 325. “I was faster than this morning and in the top ten in times so I can’t complain.”
“I have just gotten the new Performance Friction Brakes on the car and they are phenomenal,” Thomas continued. “There were a couple of moments early on until I got used to them but after that I was good to go and they worked great!”
Both Thomas and Clay said that the focus of the session for them was more about working on specific parts of the demanding Sebring track instead of worrying about setting hot laps.
“I was working on things I knew I needed to work on to get my qualifying run for tomorrow right,” Thomas said of the afternoon session. “I think I accomplished that but we will have to wait for qualifying to find out!”
“I didn’t turn a single flier,” James Clay said of his afternoon session. “I worked on some sections (of the track) that I needed to be a little bit more aggressive on and made some improvements so I left it at that.”
“I was a little too aggressive yesterday (during the open testing sessions) trying turn a flier in traffic and it is not a mistake I will repeat again!”
“I’m really happy with the setup,” James said of the handling of his #36 BimmerWorld BMW 325. “The car is handling extremely well, it is braking well and it is doing everything it should so it should be good for qualifying tomorrow.”
James Clay indicated that it would be unlikely that the BimmerWorld BMWs would run in any kind of group during qualifying for drafting purposes saying, “There is plenty room here and this track isn’t like Road America where the draft is incredibly important so I think we will find our own space for qualifying.”
Paul Goldman had the only serious trouble of the day on Wednesday as he brushed the wall breaking the right front suspension.
“Actually it wasn’t too bad” Paul said of the mid session contact that sent the #37 BimmerWorld BMW 325 limping to the pits with the tire smoking heavily.
“The car was working well and looking at the data we were getting faster and faster but it was just a little bit of pilot error going into turn nine,” Goldman recalled of the incident. “I broke a little late and had too much speed and I slid out and tapped the wall.”
“Fortunately the car isn’t too bad and it can be easily fixed so I’ll be back out driving hard tomorrow,” Paul continued.
“I have been very pleased with the way the car is setup,” said Goldman of his BMW. “The car is turning in well, it is gripping well, the brakes are working extremely well and the engine is really strong.”
“With me being new to the series there is certainly more car there for me to work up to,” Paul said with a smile. “
“It was a light ding into the wall and it broke the suspension arm and that was pretty much it so we will have it together and Paul will be ready to go,” Clay said of the damage to Paul Goldman’s car.
Qualifying for Friday’s season opening round of the SCCA SPEED World Challenge Touring Car series will begin at 11:05 AM on Thursday.
