Stevens drove a steady race from the fourth starting position, moving into third on lap three and second on lap five. Today’s finish was Steven’s fourth podium appearance of the season and consolidates his hold on the sixth position in the Championship standings.

Finishing third was Australian James Davison (HBR Motorsport Team USA) after a fine drive from his seventh starting position. He moved into fifth on the fourth lap and made the move of the race on lap seven when he passed both Kevin Lacroix and Richard Philippe for third as the three negotiated Road Atlanta’s challenging downhill final turn.

Both polesitter Lacroix and third place starter Philippe fell steadily back as the race developed. Racing closely together in the fifth and fourth positions respectively, Lacroix got by Philippe for fourth on the final lap of the race to knot the two at the top of the Championship points. Philippe was credited with the fastest lap (1:29.212) on lap 11.

The top finishing Rookies were Piscopo (P1), Stevens (P2), Davison (P3), Lacroix (P4) and Philippe (P5). Philippe continues to lead the Rookie points by three points over Lacroix. Wickens still stands third, Davison fourth and Piscopo fifth.

“I didn’t really expect to win because it is my first time at Road Atlanta,” said a satisified Piscopo. “I was not the fastest, but I was very consistent. I kept focusing on making no mistakes because the others were really pushing hard. My aim was to arrive here in Atlanta and become fifth in the Championship after the two final rounds. I already have fifth, so I have good expectations for tomorrow.”

Stevens said, “Fighting with Richard today was pretty easy. I made a mistake that almost cost me the position to him, but once my car came up to temperature, I was able to pass and drive away from him. The fight with Kevin was quite hard, but after I passed him, I opened up a gap and that allowed me to focus on Edoardo. I pushed extremely hard, really hoping for the win. Unfortunately the car developed an understeer and, combined with mistakes by both of us, I was not quite sure who was going to come out on top. Ultimately, I didn’t have enough tires left at the end for the win.”

Davison added, “I managed to get Richard and Kevin in one move and catch up to Reed and Edoardo. My team gave me a great car and I was able to take advantage of it. Tomorrow, I am starting two positions farther up the grid. The important thing will be that if Edoardo wins I must finish second to keep my fourth position in the Championship.”

After 13 rounds over seven weekends, the race for the 2005 Formula BMW USA Overall and Rookie Championships has come down to three BMW Junior drivers, Kevin Lacroix, Richard Philippe and Robert Wickens, and the 13 laps of Round 14.

The Round 14 race is scheduled to begin at 12:45 p.m. tomorrow.
