Lacroix Takes Round 13 Pole
Braselton, Ga. - Sept. 28, 2005... Kevin Lacroix (AIM Autosport) scored his second pole position of the season in today's 30-minute qualifying session for Round 13 of the 2005 Formula BMW USA Championship. His time of 1:28.842 minutes around the 2.54-mile Road Atlanta circuit bested the field of 18, in which the top-13 qualified within one second of Lacroix's pole time. Lacroix trails point leader Richard Philippe by two points in the overall Championship heading into tomorrow's penultimate race of the season.
Edoardo Piscopo (EuroInternational) scored the outside front row starting spot in the final minutes of the session with a lap of 1:28.973 minutes. Piscopo and Lacroix were the only two drivers in the 1:28 bracket.
Overall and Rookie points leader Richard Philippe (Team Autotecnica) took the third starting position with a 1:29.015 minute lap.
Separated by only .173 seconds, and Piscopo in the middle, the Philippe vs. Lacroix Round 13 battle is sure to be an exciting one. The third Championship contender, Robert Wickens (Team Apex Racing USA), third overall and second in rookie points, qualified ninth. Robert Bunker (AIM Autosport) qualified a season's best sixth.
"I am really happy to have the pole position," said Lacroix. "Richard is starting third, but the race is not done yet so we must try to finish first. Having the pole position means less pressure for me. If I were behind Richard it would be harder for me."
Piscopo said, "I aimed for the pole position, but it was really difficult because I have never driven at Road Atlanta before. The other guys have been here for testing in March. I had to learn the track, and the team the setup, today and we improved every lap. I qualified second and I think we can aim for the pole in tomorrow's Round 14 qualifying because we discovered other interesting things on the car we will work on. In the race, I plan to make a perfect start, go immediately to the lead and fly away."
Philippe added, "I am not disappointed with my effort. I would have rather been first, but the good thing is that now there is more pressure on Kevin. He was only slightly faster, so I am really not worried about the race."
The quickest Rookies in Round 13 qualifying were Lacroix (P1), Piscopo (P2), Philippe (P3), Stevens (P4) and Bunker (P6).
Round 14 qualifying will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday with the Round 13 race scheduled to start at 3:20 p.m. The Round 14 race is scheduled to start at 12:45 p.m. on Friday, and the Championship Banquet will begin at 6:00 p.m. that evening.
