Hand and Marks Drive BMW M3 to Second in CompUSA 200 at The Glen; BMW Team PTG M3s Finish 2nd, 5th and 8th in GT
Watkins Glen, N.Y. - August 12, 2005... Joey Hand and Justin Marks, driving the No. 16 BMW Team PTG F1 Air M3, finished second in today's CompUSA 200 at The Glen. The duo completed 72 laps around the 2.45-mile Watkins Glen International short course in the two-hour contest, finishing only .177 seconds behind the class winning Pontiac. Image
Polesitter Marks led the GT class for his entire 37 lap stint, setting the fastest race lap on lap 29 (1:16.018). Hand entered the No. 16 M3 during the race's third caution period. He rejoined the race in third, quickly moving to second. Never more than a few seconds behind the leader, two late-race caution periods compromised his chances for a third consecutive victory.
The strong second-place finish today, following the wins in the two previous races, moves Hand into sole possession of second in Driver Points. Marks moves to within one point of third. BMW gained two points in Manufacturer Points to consolidate its second place position.
Ian James and Chris Gleason, driving the No. 22 BMW Team PTG M3, finished fifth. Kelly Collins and RJ Valentine, driving the No. 17 BMW Team PTG F1 Air M3, finished eighth. Tom Milner, driving the No. 21 BMW Team PTG M3, crashed on lap 36. His co-driver, Bill Auberlen, did not drive.
Round 10 of the Rolex Sports Car Series, the Emco Gears Classic will take place on Aug. 26 - 27 at Mid-Ohio Sports car Course.
JOEY HAND, DRIVER NO. 16 BMW TEAM PTG F1 AIR M3 (2nd): "The No. 16 M3 still had something left at the end, but I ran out of time to make my move because of the two late-race cautions. We didn't win, but we scored some valuable points so we continue to move BMW forward."
JUSTIN MARKS, DRIVER NO. 16 BMW TEAM PTG F1 AIR M3 (2nd): "Definitely a good day for points, even if we could not get another win. I think the M3 was the best GT car at Watkins Glen today, but we just missed it a little and could not make up the lost track position at the end."
IAN JAMES, DRIVER NO. 22 BMW TEAM PTG M3 (5th): "We had a good strategy today and Chris drove a very good first stint. I got in the car and brought the No. 22 M3 up to third. Unfortunately, I lost fifth gear and that is a real handicap accelerating up these long straights. I was able to keep our competitors in Driver Points behind me so, even with a fifth place finish; we were able to contribute today."
TOM MILNER, OWNER BMW TEAM PTG: "We probably missed the perfect lap for our pit stop of the No.16 M3. We should have waited a bit longer. Watkins Glen has not been as kind as other tracks to PTG, but we did score valuable points and that is important for our chances in the championship."
LARRY KOCH, BMW OF NORTH AMERICA MOTORSPORTS MANAGER: "We expected strong competition here, but the M3 still showed it strength by leading more than half the laps. If not for the two long caution periods at the end, we just might have had another win."
