Chicago, IL (February, 22, 2004) –Anchor Racing is pleased to announce a full car assault in a BMW E46 M3 in the Grand-Am Cup, GS class. Team owner and driver, John Munson, will copilot the No. 92 Anchor Racing BMW M3 with James Sofronas. The official team sponsors are Anchor Mortgage, Anchor Group, and Anchor Development.
John Munson, Chicago, IL, is excited to compete in the Grand-AM Cup and is ready for the tough competition in the GS class. Munson’s racing experience includes BMW CCA and SCCA club racing with 9 pole positions and 7 podium finishes in a BMW E46 M3. In 2003, he ran a partial season in the Grand-Am Cup series with Istook Aines Motorsports Group in an Audi S4. Munson also finished 2nd place in driver points in the SCCA T5 Area Super Production Series, and secured 2nd place in the 10 Heures Du Man race. Munson announced, “I am pleased to be co- driving with James Sofronas. James brings years of driving experience to this new team and I am counting on his experience to improve mine. We also have brought aboard Bob Turnage, whose familiarity with BMW’s and experience in the Grand AM Cup Series as well as numerous other series adds to the strength of this team. We are looking forward to introducing our new BMW E46 M3 built by TC Kline at the Homestead Race. We tried very hard to have it ready for Daytona, but we wanted the car to be race perfect. TC Kline & Allen Jensen (ARJ ENGINE) and Neel Vasavada (EFI technologies) have put together an awesome race car.”
Sharing the cockpit in the silver #92 BMW M3 is James Sofronas from Newport Beach, CA. James has raced successfully in a multitude of racing series. In 1994, Sofronas began racing Showroom Stock B winning rookie of the year while also clinching the 1994 Championship in both the SCCA North Atlantic Road Racing Series and the SCCA New England Road Racing Series. In 2001, Sofronas won the USTCC Champion in a BMW 328i with 4 poles and five wins in seven races. Sofronas has also secured 25 overall wins in BMW CCA Racing since 1998 making him the most successful BMW Club racer on the West Coast. In addition, he has 12 top ten finishes in the Speed World Challenge Touring Series, ran eight Speedvision GT races in 2001 in a BMW E46 M3 finishing 14th overall in points, and has finished in the top 5 in the Grand Am Cup Series. Sofronas remarks, “I am extremely excited that John has invited me to drive with him and his team for the 2004 GS Championship. When I first met John last year I knew he was committed to winning and had the dedication to build a team that would help us get to the top step of the podium. Our first race of the year showed that this is a possibility as we qualified on the 3rd row and ran in the top 3 for the first hour of the race with a car that had limited test time at Daytona. I feel very confident that we can be a strong contender for the Championship as the year continues. John gets faster every time he gets in the car and I know he wants to win as much as I do so I am very much looking forward to our next race at Homestead”
Anchor Racing is dedicated to winning the Grand Am Cup Championship in the GS class. Qualifying 6th in this year’s Grand Am Cup race at Daytona, a broken dry sump belt quickly ended the race for the team. Munson is not fazed by the minor setback and looks forward to successfully racing at the Homestead Miami Speedway.
