BimmerWorld Racing Continues Strong 2005 Season at Road Atlanta Radford, VA (April 20, 2005) – In a continuation of their 2005 charge, the BimmerWorld Racing team again placed two drivers in the top 10 in a challenging weekend at their home track, Road Atlanta.
Quickly up to speed after wreck damage at the previous round in St. Petersburg two weeks ago, Seth Thomas was 6th overall on practice day with teammates James Clay and Matt Richmond following 10th and 14th respectively. On Saturday for qualifying, an engine issue persisted with Clay's #36 BMW 325i. The issue was quickly diagnosed after the session, but with an 8MPH deficit down the straight, Clay was only able to place the car in 21st position. Both Thomas and Richmond sped up over their previous practice times, but in the tightly packed top of the field, they were seeded 12th and 13th for the start of the afternoon race. Matt Richmond followed Seth Thomas's advance through the field, with a pass on Thomas to take 6th position in the closing stages of the race, the highest spot for a BMW in the field. "I am so lucky to be part of this BimmerWorld team" exclaimed Richmond after the race. "We had a good run this weekend and our crew performed flawlessly to give us the equipment to get the job done.
Seth Thomas in the #38 BimmerWorld 325i drove steadily from his 12th place qualifying position through the field. "There was a lot of racing action going on throughout the field for the entire race. It was a tough and exciting time out there" stated Thomas. After a good start and the opening laps, James Clay had advanced from his 21st place qualifying position into 13th, directly behind his teammates. Unfortunately the driver of a recently passed car attempted a pass in the tightest corner of the track and entered with too much speed, crashing into Clay and destroying the rear suspension. Clay explains "I had a great car and was on my way to a fantastic finish. I am really disappointed that my drive was cut short by an unnecessary incident." "If it wasn't for James' unfortunate incident, it's likely that we would have had three cars in the top 10 again." said BimmerWorld Race Engineer and Technical Advisor Dick Golembiewski. "The BimmerWorld crew kept at things all weekend. We've been growing as a team every race, and that hard work is going to pay off with a victory soon."
Crew Chief Jason Marks added "It was quite disappointing to leave Atlanta without a podium. Richmond and Thomas picked up some valuable points and we will show up to Mid Ohio less a little rewards weight ready for a strong BMW finish!"
The Round Three results place Matt Richmond 4th in championship points (60), James Clay 10th (40), and Seth Thomas a close 11th (34).
SPEED World Challenge Round 4 takes the BimmerWorld Racing team to the rolling hills of Mid Ohio in Lexington, OH May 20-22.
