BMW Team PTG M3s Will Start 5th, 6th, 13th and 21st in Grand Prix of Miami Justin Marks was the fastest of the four BMW Team PTG drivers in today’s 15-minute GT class qualifying session for tomorrow’s Grand Prix of Miami. Marks’ lap of 1:21.864 minutes around the 2.3-mile Homestead-Miami Speedway road course was good enough to secure the fifth starting position for the No. 16 BMW Team PTG F1 Air M3. This weekend is the debut for the two new F1 Air-sponsored M3s. Just one-tenth of a second slower than Marks, Joey Hand qualified the No. 21 BMW Team PTG M3 in the sixth starting position (1:21.985), for an all-M3 row three. Chris Gleason will start the No. 22 BMW Team PTG M3 13th after posting a time of 1:23.235 minutes. RJ Valentine, in the second F1 Air M3, will start 21st (1:24.454). Originally scheduled for 4:15 p.m., the GT qualifying session was moved forward to 1:00 p.m. this afternoon to accommodate the variable weather conditions and the change in the IRL practice schedule. In 2004, BMW Team PTG began a seven-race winning streak at the Grand Prix of Miami with a 1-2 BMW M3 finish. Crossing the finish line side-by-side, the No. 21 M3 of Bill Auberlen and Boris Said won the race from the pole. Joey Hand and Justin Marks finished second in the No. 22 M3. The 250-mile Grand Prix of Miami is scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM ET on Saturday and will televised live on Speed Channel. Background: 2005 marks the tenth season of competition for BMW M3s of BMW Team PTG and 30th anniversary of BMW of North America’s motorsport programs. In nine seasons, BMW Team PTG has won a total of 46 races in both sprint and endurance racing series and 14 sports car racing championships. In 2004, BMW Team PTG swept the Rolex Sports Car Series GT class Manufacturer, Driver and Team Points championships, winning 10 of 12 races. Page 2 JUSTIN MARKS, DRIVER NO. 16 BMW TEAM PTG F1 AIR M3 (fifth): “We  fixed  the  stud  problems  we  had  at  Daytona.  The  M3  is  running  a  bit  better  and,  if  we manage the rear tires during the race to take care of the grip, I think we will have a very good car. The M3 is very strong in the transition areas of the track. We may not have the speed on the straights, but if we are consistently quick through the infield we will have a good race.” JOEY HAND, DRIVER NO. 21 BMW TEAM PTG M3 (sixth): “Obviously the guys have been working very hard since Daytona and the M3s are much better. The car is especially strong getting into the high speed corners like turn one, all the way to turn three. I’m not sure that the competition has shown us everything that they have, but I am still confident that we will have something for them tomorrow. CHRIS GLEASON, DRIVER NO. 22 BMW TEAM PTG M3 (13th): “I think I could have done a little better. There is a sweet-spot you must find in the tires within the first few laps of qualifying and I think I missed it by a little. The M3 was very stable on the banking.  There  is  still  a  slight  understeer  in  a  few  corners  that  we  will  have  to  work  on tomorrow.” RJ VALENTINE, DRIVER NO. 17 BMW TEAM PTG F1 AIR M3 (21st): “I  don’t  think  I  have  had  this  much  fun  in  quite  a  few  years.  This  M3  stuck  like  paint,  it  ran impeccably,  shifted  properly,  and  the  brakes  were  unbelievable.  The  car  did  everything  well, exactly  where  I  wanted  it  to.  I  have  improved  one-half  second  every  session.  As  I  get  more familiar with the car I expect to keep moving forward.”
