CHICAGO - On Tuesday, August 19 at 1:30 pm, Ken Dobson and Will Turner, top-ten rated drivers in the Speed Touring Car Division of the Speed World Challenge, will bring their race-prepared BMW’s to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Chicago. Dobson’s team, Chili Pepper Racing (www.chilipepperracing.org), was founded to raise funds and awareness for medical charities, notably C. Thompson Children’s Hospital in Chattanooga, TN (www.Erlanger.org) and Remote Area Medical (www.ramusa.org) of Knoxville, TN. Chili Pepper’s founder, Jim Osborn, MD, trained as an orthopedic and spine surgeon at Shriners, has long wanted his team to visit the patients there.
Osborn began racing in 1981 while in college, became a driving school instructor, then entered serious competition in 1996 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Single and a successful surgeon, Osborn decided to dedicate his racing to those who needed medical help around the world, and Chili Pepper raises funds to provide free medical, surgical, dental, and vision care to the underprivileged and those in remote areas without access to medical care.
In February of this year, Dobson joined Osborn in the cause at Chili Pepper. Dobson grew up in the Chicago area, competing on BMX bikes by the age of 13. After graduation from California State University, Chico, he became a racing instructor, then later a driving coach and precision driver for commercial advertisements. His work can currently be seen in various Honda, Infiniti, and Hyundai advertisements.
For the visit to Shriners, Chili Pepper enlisted Will Turner, of Turner Motorsport, to visit the hospital as well. Dobson and Turner are on their way to Round 7 of the famous Speed Channel World Challenge Touring Car Series at Road America Raceway, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin starting on August 21. This professional racing series sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA ProRacing) and sponsored by the “Speed” Channel has become increasingly popular. Race Car drivers from all forms of racing have come to participate in the World Challenge series for driver championship points. In addition these race prepared Acura, Audis, BMW, Chevrolets, Fords, Dodge, Nissan and other marks compete for manufacture championships. The World Challenge Series takes the race teams to tracks across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico….truly a World Challenge Series.
Dobson and Turner are excited to demonstrate their machines for the young people at Shriners. Several Shriners patients are active go-kart racers; one patient, with only one limb (his right arm), was recently certified as a factory-trained mechanic for VW and last year finished first in the Rotax Max category of karting.
