Daytona Beach, FL - 2/5/2005 – Following a disappointing qualifying session on Thursday, Anchor Racing hoped their luck would turn around for Friday’s race. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Early in the 200 mile endurance race, the No. 92 Anchor Racing BMW M3, driven by John Munson was struck again. “Yesterday, we were hit on the driver’s rear side. Today, Automatic Racing’s BMW M3 hits us on the driver’s front side,” explained Munson. “The crew did an amazing job repairing the problem so we could finish the race.” Once the car was repaired, James Sofronas took the wheel and set the car’s fastest lap at 2:05.304, finishing 37th in the GS class....“Hard luck continued today,” reported Sofronas. “John was punted forty minutes into the race. It broke the left front wheel and threw off the alignment. Fortunately, the crew was able to repair the car.”
Andres Hainer had a great start in the No. 99 Anchor Racing/UnderArmour/BMW M3 as he quickly moved through the crowed field. Following Anders’ driving stint, Boris Said took the driver’s seat, hoping to finish in the top five. Unfortunately, three laps following the driver change, differential problems caused Said to make an unplanned pit stop. A mounting bolt failed, forcing the team to lose valuable time in the pits. Hainer was eventually able to get behind the wheel with a 34th class finish, setting the fastest lap at 2:04.957. “Unfortunately, we are going through some growing pains,” explained Said. “The car is fast and competitive, but bugs in the car need to get worked out.”
The No. 93 Anchor Racing/Hyper Sport Engineering/BMW M3 driven by Rick Skelton detected problems at the start of the race, forcing him to pit early. A loose piece from the exhaust system was repaired and Skelton was able to quickly return to the track. Foster took the checkered flag, with a 26th class finish. “Anchor Racing has a bright future ahead of it,” smiled Skelton. “As a passionate BMW enthusiast, I’m happy to see the M3s so competitive.”
Anchor Racing will continue to develop the cars prior to round two at Santo Domingo on March 11-13, 2005. “We feel that we have learned a lot this weekend and we hope to get everything sorted out prior to the next race,” said team owner, Munson.
