CREW CHIEF MARKS WINS ZIMMERMANN CUP

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Oct. 19, 2004) – BimmerWorld Racing’s crew and crew chief Jason Marks were honored at the SCCA SPEED World Challenge year-end banquet Sunday night by winning the SPEED Touring Car Crew of the Year award, while Marks was awarded the Zimmermann Cup.

The BimmerWorld crew was recognized for their tireless efforts throughout this season, as they were voted Crew of the Year by the SCCA SPEED World Challenge teams. Under Marks leadership, the three-car BimmerWorld team became quite proficient at fixing crash damaged cars on short notice, while still making them competitive. This was evidenced when Marks and his crew helped drivers James Clay, Seth Thomas and Matt Richmond finish third, fourth and fifth, respectively, at Road Atlanta following the Round Nine SPEED Touring Car race.

“It was a nice way to show the amount of work my guys put into it this year,” Marks said of winning the Crew of the Year award. “Everyone of them worked incredibly hard and no body got discouraged. It seemed like every time we got them [the cars] straightened out, something went upside down or inside out and we’d have some work to do. We saw a lot of sunsets and a lot of sunrises at the track this year, without a trip to the hotel. It was pretty fitting for those guys to share in that experience.

“I believe for every bad thing that happens, an equal amount of good happens,” Marks said of what kept the crew focused in light of adversity. “All three of our drivers are capable of doing some amazing stuff out there and I think every guy on the team just wanted to get it [the car] back together and give those guys a chance.”

I am so proud of the BimmerWorld crew and my crew chief Jason Marks,” Clay said. “They have done more than we thought humanly possible on more than one occasion this year. I am very happy their unfaltering spirit was recognized.”

Marks’ hard work, passion and dedication to seeing his team succeed in the face of adversity resulted in being awarded the Zimmermann Cup.

The Zimmermann Cup is an annual award presented in the memory of multi-time Championship winning crew chief Jerome Zimmermann (1967-2003) at season’s end to the crew chief that best exemplifies the similar passion, dedication and success Zimmermann had in the SCCA SPEED World Challenge. Last season’s inaugural winner was Dax Raub of 3R-Racing.

“The World Challenge is such a competitive and professional racing series that winning the Zimmermann Cup is an incredible honor,” Marks said of receiving the award. “I am still amazed by the whole experience. I can’t give enough thanks to my friends, family, crew and drivers for their love and support throughout the year.

“I was stunned,” Marks said of his initial reaction to winning the award. “There are at least 50 to 60 other great teams and competitors out there, in both Touring Car and GT, who worked incredibly hard to win some races and some Championships. It is quite an honor to be selected from the cream of the crop of racing professionals.”
