Woodcliff Lake, NJ - August 18, 2004... The BMW Group (BMW and MINI brands combined) has awarded four $10,000 scholarships to high-achieving students attending Lincoln Technical Institute to obtain an education/degree in automotive technology. Three of the recipients are recent high school graduates: David Guddemi of Bogota High School, Doug Mayone and Bryan Barsiglia, both of Northern Highlands Regional High School (Allendale). The fourth winner, Laurence Selkirk, currently attends Lincoln Technical Institute in Mahwah, New Jersey.
Recognizing the need for highly trained automotive technicians, the BMW Group supports advances in automotive education with scholarships and training programs. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 60,000 automotive service jobs in the U.S. are going unfilled as the automotive industry competes for skilled labor with other high tech industries. Anticipated 18% growth for the profession by 2010 translates into the need for an additional 991,000 technicians on the job.
With more than 2 million BMWs on the road today, and new sales expected to reach 300,000 annually in the next few years, the need for highly skilled technicians to diagnose and repair these increasingly sophisticated automobiles continues to escalate. "We are delighted to help local students obtain an education in automotive technology at Lincoln Technical Institute " said Lawrence Demski, Eastern Region Aftersales Manager, BMW of North America, LLC. "There is a huge demand from area dealers for qualified service personnel, and programs like this one go a long way in helping to meet that demand."
The partnership with Lincoln Tech is part of the BMW Group's ongoing commitment to educating the next generation of automotive technicians. Lincoln Tech is a leading provider of postsecondary automotive training that has provided skilled technicians to the automotive market since 1946. Each school provides students with in-demand training in a diverse, hands-on environment. Lincoln Tech's graduates posses the confidence and skills necessary to obtain entry-level positions with the best dealerships, independent shops or other service outlets.
"We are grateful to BMW of North America for generously supporting the education of automotive students at Lincoln Technical Institute," says Thomas Lynch, Executive Director of Lincoln Tech's Mahwah campus. "By providing scholarships to talented students, BMW can help students obtain a good education and open the door to a variety of career opportunities." The automotive program at Lincoln Tech appeals to car enthusiasts like award recipient, Laurence Selkirk. Mr. Selkirk has wanted to work in the auto industry since he learned to walk. "I never played Little League. I never joined the Boy Scouts. And I did not play with action figures. I played with toy cars exclusively."
The BMW Group's passion for performance is a message to live by for Mr. Selkirk. He currently holds a perfect 4.0 GPA at Lincoln Tech, and his records show perfect attendance. Selkirk hopes to continue his education, both in the automotive field and in the classroom, by pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree.
