Indianapolis, Ind. - June 20, 2004... Matt Jaskol (Team Autotecnica) took his second Formula BMW USA victory of the season today at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in championship style. The 19-year old from Las Vegas, Nevada completed 14 laps in the 30-minute race, finishing 1.213 seconds ahead of Championship points leader Andreas Wirth (HBR Motorsport). Rookie points leader James Hinchcliffe (AIM Autosport) ran a solid race from his fifth starting position to finish third.
Wirth extended his points lead to 15 over Hinchcliffe. Jonathan Summerton (HBR Motorsport) stands third with Jaskol only one point behind in fourth. Billy Johnson (Team PTG Motorsport) rounds out the top-five.
As the field began to stretch out in the opening laps pole-sitter Summerton maintained a three second lead over Jaskol, who had moved into second after an excellent start. Jaskol moved past Summerton on lap nine and did not look back. Wirth snuck past Summerton and into second on the last lap and as a result of a battle with his teammate Summerton slid off the track and ultimately finished fourth.
"The first lap I got close to Jonathan I needed to feel out the draft," said Jaskol. "I did not want to pop out too early because he seemed to be a little quicker than me getting onto the straight. I had to make sure I could get past him and not let him draft back by me on the last lap. Fortunately the Team Autotecnica gave me a perfect car today."
Wirth added, "Two seconds this weekend is good for the points. I think the tire pressure was a bit low at the beginning so the car got better and better as the race went on. With a few more laps I may have been closer to Matt."
"A podium finish is always great," said Hinchcliffe. "But unfortunately I finished behind Andreas and he is the guy I am battling for the championship."
The top-three finishing rookies were third-place Hinchcliffe, fourth-place Summerton and seventh-place Federico Montoya (Atlantic Racing Team).
