Montreal, CANADA - June 13, 2004...Matt Jaskol (Team Autotecnicia) took a thrilling victory in Round 4 of the 2004 Formula BMW USA Championship today in front of a large Canadian Grand Prix crowd. The 19-year old, from Las Vegas, Nevada, completed 12 laps in 30-minute race, finishing .473 seconds ahead of Rookie points leader James Hinchcliffe (AIM Autosport). Championship points leader Andreas Wirth (HBR Motorsport) came from 15th to finish third.
The Championship points race has tightened considerably as the Series heads toward Rounds 5 and 6 at the US Grand Prix next weekend. Wirth is only seven points ahead of Hinchcliffe and Jaskol has moved into third on the strength of today's win and a third-place finish yesterday.
The field got away cleanly at the start with Hinchcliffe taking the point, closely followed by Round 3 winner Jonathan Summerton (HBR Motorsport). Summerton tried to pass Hinchcliffe on the next lap and the two made slight contact. Summerton spun and the incident slowed Hinchcliffe enough to allow Jaskol to get a run on him. By the end of lap two Jaskol had worked his way into the lead from his fifth-place starting spot. Jaskol drove smoothly for the next ten laps and took the win. Behind Hinchcliffe, Billy Johnson (Team PTG Motorsport) ran in the third spot.
Behind the top-three many were having a very good day. After starting from the 15th position, Andreas Wirth was close behind Johnson by lap four and the two traded the third and fourth spots for the next four laps. Wirth got by Johnson on lap eight and Johnson held off a charging Summerton for his best finish of the season to-date. Alexis Fenton (Team Autotecnica) also had her best finish of the season in eleventh.
"I could not get anyone on the start because of the very low grip," said Jaskol." But I was able to make some very good passes on the opening lap. The car was great in a straight line. We struggled at Lime Rock so to win here - in front of so may people - is fantastic. I am very happy that my father was here to see this. There is nothing better than to take a win going into the US Grand Prix."
Hinchcliffe added, "Three second place finishes in four races is a good, consistent streak. Two podiums this weekend is fantastic. The car ran very well all day. When Jonathan tried to pass me we made contact and Matt capitalized on it. He got in my draft and was able to get by me. I tried to get the lead back in one of the chicanes, but he took a little air off my front wing. I went wide and that allowed him to get away from me."
"I made a mistake on the first lap and locked up a wheel," said Wirth. "That affected my braking for the rest of the race. Fifth yesterday and third today is good for the points. It is important for me to still be leading the championship."
The top-three finishing rookies were second-place James Hinchcliffe (AIM Autosport), fifth-place Jonathan Summerton (HBR Motorsport) and seventh-place Tom Milner (Team PTG Motorsport).

BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen adds, "Our junior talent promotion program is an intensive basic education for successful kart drivers who want to move up into Formula racing. Our priorities are to create a level playing field through technically identical vehicles and scrupulously defined regulations, and to ensure maximum safety."
The ultra-modern Formula BMW racecar, which allows 15-year-olds to enter the world of motor racing, has been lining up on the grid all around the world since the 2002 season. It sets standards above all on the safety technology front. The single-seater, powered by a 140 bhp BMW motorcycle engine producing speeds up to 140 mph, features a carbon-fiber chassis and fulfils the safety requirements of the much higher-performance Formula 3 cars.
In 2004, Formula BMW will be staged in four different series held in Germany, England, Asia and the USA. Formula BMW events will be part of the Formula One support program on five occasions around the world. All the series go hand-in-hand with a comprehensive education and coaching program, as well as substantial financial backing for promising young talent. The most distinguished graduate is Ralf Schumacher. The star of the BMW WilliamsF1 Team made his racing debut in the junior class in 1992.
