Lakeville, Conn. – May 31, 2004… Andreas Wirth (HBR Motorsport) became the first double winner in the inaugural Formula BMW USA Championship with a second win in today’s Round 2 contest at Lime Rock Park. He covered 21 laps in the 18- minute contest, finishing .502 seconds ahead of the second place car of the weekend’s double-pole winner Matt Jaskol (Team Autotecnica). Brian Frisselle (Atlantic Racing Team) finished third. At the start of the race, Jaskol led the field into turn one and held the point until the No. 2 of Jonathan Summerton (HBR Motorsport) took over the lead at lap four and pulled ahead by two seconds. Wirth moved in front of Jaskol on lap 7. The race began to settle into a fast rhythm until Summerton spun off the track at turn two on lap 13. Brian Frisselle had moved from his seventh starting spot to take a firm hold on third. A bobble in Lime Rock’s only left-hand turn gave Joey Hand (Team PTG Motorsport) a chance at Frisselle, but the youngster from Hawaii held off Hand’s challenge. Hand finished fourth, just ahead of Rookie class leader James Hinchcliffe (AIM Autosport) to round out the top-five finishers.
“This is the best weekend that I have ever had,” said Wirth. “I had too much wheel spin at the start and did not think I had the best chance. But like in Saturday’s race, as the race continued my car got faster. When Jonathan went off, Jaskol was just ahead of me. I got a good draft going into turn one and was able to overtake him cleanly.” A disappointed Jaskol added, “The team worked very hard to change every sensor in the car to try to fix our electrical problem so we did not have the time to work on the race trim. With today’s condition changes we did not have the straight-line speed we needed and I had to settle for second. With two poles we have shown that we have the speed to win, but it was just not our weekend.” Brian Frisselle said, ”I am very happy with third. We had very little testing time and the team had quite a few cars to look after this weekend. To go from seventh to third is very good. I made one mistake that let Joey get under me, but I got him back in the next turn.” “Overall we are very pleased with the performance of all our drivers and teams,” said Alex Schmuck, Formula BMW USA Manager. “Both races were very exciting and safe. It is great to see that the competition particularly at the front of the field is as close as it is and that each driver is improving every time they take to the track.” The top-three finishing rookies were fifth-place Hinchcliffe (AIM Autosport), eighth- place Tom Milner (Team PTG Motorsport) and ninth-place Trevor Daley (Atlantic Racing Team) Rounds 3 and 4 of the Formula BMW USA Championship will take place in support of the Canadian Grand Prix on June 11-13. Our priorities are to create a level playing field through technically identical vehicles and scrupulously defined regulations, and to ensure maximum safety.” The ultra-modern Formula BMW racecar, which allows 15-year-olds to enter the world of motor racing, has been lining up on the grid all around the world since the 2002 season. It sets standards above all on the safety technology front. The single- seater, powered by a 140 bhp BMW motorcycle engine producing speeds up to 140 mph, features a carbon-fiber chassis and fulfils the safety requirements of the much higher-performance Formula 3 cars. In 2004, Formula BMW will be staged in four different series held in Germany, England, Asia and the USA. Formula BMW events will be part of the Formula One support program on five occasions around the world. All the series go hand-in-hand with a comprehensive education and coaching program, as well as substantial financial backing for promising young talent. The most distinguished graduate is Ralf Schumacher. The star of the BMW WilliamsF1 Team made his racing debut in the junior class in 1992.
