Woodcliff Lake, NJ – May 28, 2004… The face of open-wheel racing in North America is set to change this holiday weekend as the first two rounds of the inaugural Formula BMW USA Championship take the green flag at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Conn. “It is fitting that Formula BMW USA begins on Memorial Day Weekend,” said Alex Schmuck, Formula BMW USA Manager. “Traditionally, it is a very important weekend for motorsports and the unofficial start of the summer. For Formula BMW USA to begin our summer season on the same weekend as the Indianapolis 500 and, this year, the European Grand Prix is wonderful and completely appropriate. As Formula BMW has done in Germany, Asia and the United Kingdom we begin our own, new tradition, this weekend.” Sixteen young drivers will line up for the first standing start of the 14-race season on Saturday, May 29. The second race will be held on Monday, May 31.
The Formula BMW USA field is full of talented youngsters. All six of the Formula BMW Junior drivers selected in January’s shoot-out in Valencia, Spain will be on the grid - Graham Rahal (Vitesse Farm Racing), Jonathan Summerton (HBR Motorsport), Trevor Daley (Atlantic Racing), Tom Milner (Team PTG Motorsport), Billy Johnson (Team PTG Motorsport) and James Hinchcliffe (AIM Autosport). Practice begins on Friday morning with qualifying in the afternoon. Round 1 of the Formula BMW USA Championship is scheduled for 1:25 p.m. Saturday. Monday’s Round 2 contest is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen adds, “Our junior talent promotion program is an intensive basic education for successful kart drivers who want to move up into Formula racing. Our priorities are to create a level playing field through technically identical vehicles and scrupulously defined regulations, and to ensure maximum safety.” The ultra-modern Formula BMW racecar, which allows 15-year-olds to enter the world of motor racing, has been lining up on the grid all around the world since the 2002 season. It sets standards above all on the safety technology front. The single-seater, powered by a 140 bhp BMW motorcycle engine producing speeds up to 140 mph, features a carbon-fiber chassis and fulfils the safety requirements of the much higher-performance Formula 3 cars. In 2004, Formula BMW will be staged in four different series held in Germany, England, Asia and the USA. Formula BMW events will be part of the Formula One support program on five occasions around the world. All the series go hand- in-hand with a comprehensive education and coaching program, as well as substantial financial backing for promising young talent. The most distinguished graduate is Ralf Schumacher. The star of the BMW WilliamsF1 Team made his racing debut in the junior class in 1992.
