TOPEKA, Fla. (March 26, 2004) – SCCA Pro Racing announced today the race format and purse structure for the SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Invitational, as part of a new tuner-focused weekend called Drift Atlanta® April 23-25 at Road Atlanta.

Headlining the Drift Atlanta weekend, the SPEED Touring Car series will feature two non-points races. The first race, a qualifying sprint, will determine the running order for the Sunday’s Sport Compact GP. The qualifying race is set for set for 3:45 p.m. Saturday, April 24 and the race winner will receive $1,000 from series sponsor Air Force Reserve.

Competitors in the Sport Compact GP will have the opportunity to compete for the richest purse in SPEED Touring Car history, totaling more than $40,000 with the race winner taking home a guaranteed $10,000. The Sport Compact GP green flag standing start is set for 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 25.

“We are thrilled to be a part of this inaugural event,” SCCA Pro Racing Vice President and General Manager Mitch Wright said. “While the entire weekend will be history making in and of itself, the SPEED Touring Car series will make a little history of its own. Not only will we award the largest purse in SPEED Touring Car history, but we will also run essentially two 30-minute sprint races. Our races are typically scheduled for 50-minutes. In the future, we would like to do more of these ‘shootout’ type formats.”

Both races are a sprint format and will be a pre-determined amount of laps or 30-minutes, whichever comes first.

In addition to the two SPEED Touring Car races, fans will get the opportunity to witness the inaugural Formula Drift® Series event, not to mention some of the hottest wheel-to-wheel racing compliments of the Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires, the Formula Ford Zetec Championship and SCCA Pro-IT series. Tuner fans won’t want to miss the Mazda Extreme Street car show, as well as the lifestyle marketing events including a concert and extensive vendor displays.

The SPEED Touring Car races will not be broadcast and therefore will not be run for Championship points. The action can be followed, as always, on Live Timing & Scoring Presented by Cadillac at www.world-challenge.com .
