NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (March 15, 2004) -- James F. Sofronas, President of Global Motorsports Group ( www.gmgracing.com ), has signed on to drive for Tecmark Autosport in the 2004 SCCA SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Championship. After competing in five races for Tecmark in 2003, James plans to run the entire 2004 season gunning for the SPEED Touring Car Championship in an E46 325ci built by Tecmark Autosport.
"I can't tell you how excited I am to drive for Walter and Tecmark again in 2004," Sofronas said. "This is by far one of the best team/car combinations I have driven for in my career and I can't wait until the first race at Sebring".
"I have known Walter Swick, owner of Tecmark Autosport ( www.tecmarkautosport.com ), for close to ten years now and you won't find a nicer, more friendly and determined team owner. He has the commitment and will to win and has shown that in his ability to build some of the most meticulous and precise BMW Touring cars in North America , Walter's attention to detail is second to none."
Walter and James spoke mid-season last year about building a second car for James to race alongside Nic Jonnson and he couldn't wait to climb on board. Walter was able to build the car in just three weeks last year and despite the lack of testing and development, James managed to finish in the top ten. Now for 2004, Tecmark will have a fully developed car with several new components added to the package which should put James in a position to stand on the podium this year.
Walter's team at Tecmark is quickly becoming one of the premier teams in SPEED World Challenge Touring cars. Tecmark recently moved into a 12,000 square ft. facility in Mentor , Ohio with full fabrication and performance product manufacturing capabilities with the ability to build a complete racecar from a bare chassis. Global Motorsports Group (GMG) is a specialized high performance BMW race shop in California that will be selling many of the products that Tecmark Autosport designs, develops and builds at it's shop in Ohio . "It's a natural combinatio n s ince Tecmark has the facility to produce the products and GMG has the ability to market them to the BMW enthusiast", James added also added, "GMG has a strong following in the BMW Club Racing community as well as a strong track record within the racing ranks racking up over 25 overall wins in the past 5 years in BMW Club Racing so we work closely with a lot of our fellow BMW racers."
James has competed in the both the SPEED World Challenge GT and Touring Classes over the past 10 years with several top 5 qualifying positions and top 10 finishes. James also captured the 2001 United States Touring Car Championship, in a BMW. "We owe a lot of our success racing BMW's from the support we get from our sponsors, Cobalt Friction Brake Pads, Eibach Springs, BBS Wheels, Moton Shocks, Sparco and DTMPower.net. We have also secured some regional sponsorship from Shoreline Motoring in Huntington Beach , CA ( www.shorelinemotoring.com ), a facility we use for car prep and setup before each local race out here on the west coast.
James will rejoin with Nic Jonnson as well as newcomer to the series Scott Galaba to expand to a three-car team for Tecmark in 2004 as the series kicks off March 19 at Sebring International Raceway.
