1979 - The first M series was introduced. This was the E26 M1. It had a six cylinder engine with 277 HP and a top speed of 262 km/h. The M1 was designed by Giugiaro. In that same year the E12 M535i was introduced. This was the first four door M series. It had a six cylinder engine with 218 HP. 1981 - The E26 M1 and E12 M535i went out of production. 1983 - The E24 M6 was introduced. It was available as 2 door coupe and it had a six cylinder engine with 286 HP and a top speed of 255 km/h. 1984 - A new E28 M535i was introduced. This model also had a six cylinder with 218 HP. 1985 - The first E28 M5 came available. It had a six cylinder engine with 286 HP and a top speed of 245 km/h. 1986 - The first E30 M3 was introduced. It was available with or without catalist. Both models had four cylinder engines. 1988 - The M3 convertible came available and the E28 M5 went out of production. 1989 - The M3 received a new engine wich now had 215 HP.The E34 M5 was introduced. It had 315 HP and a top speed of 250 km/h. The E24 M6 went out of production. 1992 - The new E36 M3 coupe was introduced, this model had a six cylinder with 286 HP. The M5 received a new engine wich now had 340 HP. 1994 - The M3 sedan and M3 convertible came available. 1995 - A small face lift was made to the M5 but later that year it went out of production. 1996 - All M3 models received a new engine wich now had 321 HP. 1997 - The M3 sedan went out of production. 1998 - The M coupe and the M roadster were introduced. They have a six cylinder engine with 321 HP and a top speed of 250 km/h. This was also the same year that the E39 M5 was introduced wich has an eight cylinder with 400 HP. 1999 - The E36 M3 coupe and convertible went out production. 2000 - The new E46 M3 was introduced. 2001 - A new M3 will come available around September. The E46 M3 Coupe will have a six cylinder engine with 343 HP. A convertible will also come available but not until May 2001. BMW might also introduce the X5M around November 2001.
