Hi all. I have just bought an '85 323i (quite common in Australia with this motor). I had my first track day with it and I found the standard brakes a bit weak. I would like to get bigger brakes without resorting to Brembo, Willwood et al.$$$$$$$$$$> Is it possible to fit the bigger brakes from, say, a 525 or 740 or anything. I suspect I may have to replace struts as well. Can anyone tell me if this is possible? I also realize that some new brake pads would help, but I would like to explore trying to get bigger rotors on the cheap. Help

I heard that you could use the e28 5 series front struts, which will have bigger brakes, and it will up you to a 5 lug pattern from a 4 lug...if you want to go that route.
Or, you could just upgrade your stock system - I've got Zimmerman Sport rotors with PBR Organic pads (I can stand on the brake, and it stops faster than my vette) - if you just upgrade the rotors to Brembo or Zimmerman, the stock size, go with a cross drilled rotor, and a Hawk HPS or Pagid Blue pad - you'd see a world of difference, even if you just upgraded the pads on the stock rotors. Getting a big brake kit is the best way to go, but that costs over 4k, and has a bit more weight. Also, a good idea is to add some brake ducting, which I've seen so often, just to force cool air directly onto the rotor, it's the buildup of heat and gasses that build up between the rotor and pad that cause brake fade, and on a budget, go for the cross drilled rotors and a pad upgrade - if you're ready, get the SS lines.

Thanks for that. I got close to the brakes fading. I didn't lose braking but I had to press the pedal further to get the same effect. My wife, who was watching said there was a small amount of smoke coming out from under the car at the end of the straight. There is also a strong smell occurring occasionally. I realize that this relates mostly to the (OEM) pads that I have & uprating them will help this. It was interesting to hear of your experience with stock size rotors etc. It is something to think about. I have to weigh up all the different options. Ta

I'm not sure about the smoke...
I got a suggestion from a friend today, who actually is a BMW mechanic and crews on race teams / drives.
Best solution for you, on a budget - stainless steel lines, upgraded pads and ducting - forcing cool air directly onto the rotor.
I think that BMP Design sells the ducting kit for the e30, but you must remove the front hubs/bearings and pull the splash cover to install this mod.
Always upgrade the "whoa" before upgrading the "Go" - you have to have enough or more than enough power to stop.

That sounds very logical and imminently possible. I will certainly be fixing the brakes & suspension before I start on the (300,000 km) engine. Having said that I have just had a M20 2.7 eta crankshaft offered to me at the right price (actually the best possible price). Anyway, can I use this crank in my engine (when the time comes)? Is it a worthwhile mod? Thanks for your help

I'm in Victoria, Australia. I like the look of K-Mac suspension stuff here in Aust. My priorities will probably be 1) bigger sway bars 2) adjustable strut mounts 3) Bilsteins or maybe coilovers & 4) strut braces. What about them apples???

racing dynamics sway bars - 22mm front, 19mm rear. camber plates - usually sold by Turner Motorsport, over $300.00, bilstein sport shocks(for lowered springs), racing dynamics front/rear strut braces.
