2000 VW Passat 1.8t

« on: Saturday, June 10, 2006 - 09:59 PM »

Well... I was drving down the road today and guess what happened?

Typical VW... Snapped the timing belt... ouch. 86990 miles... just over the reccomended replacement mileage for the T-belt... by 400 miles...

its at the VW dealership now, its $360 to pull the head and find out what damage it caused... could end up costing me $4000+ by the time all is said and done.

a damned $150 to tow it 8 miles to the dealer... rip off huh?

Sorry to read about this.  I doubt he bought a warranty, and I wonder if timing belts would be covered?

well VW covers T-belt failure under warranty since it is such a common occurance. BUT the 10yr/10K warranty ONLY applies to... you guessed it... the ORIGINAL owner, not the third. So im SOL...

However there is a dim light on the horizon, there is an attempt being made by second and third and later owners of VW/Audi 1.8t motors to get a class action suit against VAG because they know it is a common problem and have yet to fix it/offer a solution for second or third or later owners so it doesnt cost us so much to get it fixed. It worked with Audi 2.8t motors... Hopefully it will wotk for us 1.8t people too...

That's good to hear, but it doesn't sound like it will be resolved by this weekend.

so... now that i've gotten to thinking baout it... now is the perfect time for some performance upgrades *devil grin*

I'm getting a new head shipped to me this week. It's going into my buddies shop to get a mildly agressive port and polish and slightly more agressive cams. The intake and exhaust manifolds are getting ported and polished. The turbo is getting ported and matched to the manifold (i know... "JUST DO A TURBO UPGRADE!" thats later...) 3" downpipe and turbo back exhaust.

"Wow Dustin, thats a lot of money..."

I know huh... BUT for the same amount VW was gonna charge me to just rebuild my head, I'm getting all of this done so... yeah.

I'm gonna make a road trip in a few months to Pheonix and go to Revo and get chipped and tuned. $500 gets the software and 2 hours dyno tuning time.

Should be fun... Smiley
