2000 VW Passat 1.8t

« on: Monday, June 20, 2005 - 02:24 PM »

Well since I am a broke ass white boy and can't seem to get financed on a new GTI or base modle 3 Series right now (I've tried so hard... I just can't come up with the down payment...) I got an off road toy to play with for the next few months until i get another couple thousand saved for a new car. A 1991 Jeep XJ (Cherokee) Sport. It's got a 4.0L High Output inline six that is torquey as hell.

So far the mod list includes 31" tall tires and a 4x4posilock four wheel drive engagment system (basically my vacume moter that automatically engages four wheel drive burnt out so i replaced it with a manual engagement system that i pull inside the cab and lock the axle in my self with...) This jeep was my sisters before it became mine and I know the whole history of it so thats good. The motor was replaced 10,000 miles ago so i should be set to go on that front...

In the very near future (next month or so) It's getting a 3" suspension lift, quick swaybar disconnects (to allow for more suspension flex) and some stuff to make getting un stuck easier, like tow hooks and all that good stuff.

I am currently drawing up some plans to make my own roof rack to hold all my equipment and stuff, and I might try to fabricate my own rock crawler bumpers but I will probably just end up buying them in a few months...

Anyway I'll try to get some pics today and put them up and I will def. keep updating them as the "Daily Driver/Trailmaster delux of Death and Doom" comes along.

These are rock bumpers, they are made to allow for more ground clearance than the stock bumpers. They are pretty sweet. I'll get some pictures this weekend we are going out on the trails for some fun in the dirt.

I've off-roading in couple different places in NM.  Down in Lincoln county and up around the Pecos wilderness area.  It was great.

Ah, shiiiit, too bad....
I had the same with me landcruiser, there was some pin broken off the crank shaft, causing it not to cool anymore, no more battery charging, no ac, no powersteering, lost everything....
Got towed back to the nearest "town" by a landrover accidentally passing (thank god, was in the middle of nowhere), and got the car fixed within 2 days Smiley

ps really cool pic number 2 Tongue

I got this beast back on the trail finally. We went out two weeks ago and it did amazing. I have made a few more mods that you can't see so I'll just write 'em down here..

I welded the front diff together, made a poor mans locker, it works so good. It'll probably break quick but thats alright, it will give me a chance to upgrade the axels.

I put a triple core radiator in. The jeep stays so cool now. Almost runs too cold lol...

I lifted it another inch. I just need to man up and lift it to eight inches and put it on 35's already... I'd be unstoppable then...

"new" bodywork. I slidd off a rock and smashed the front passenger fender into another rock. Broke the side indicator. I also smashed up the rocker panels some more so... My doors dont really function all that great anymore lol...

you welded the diff?
isn't there a diff-lock on the front wheels? or do you want a permanent lock..?
Love to see some more pics of some trips...

ps do you have a sticker on your jeep which says "this side up"?

heh I should have that sticker made.... stick it on the back hatch...

I want the front end permanently locked. Right now it has a two piece axle, so when not in four wheel drive it drives like normal. when in four wheel drive the two axle halves are joined together and it becomes a true four wheel drive. all four wheels with power going to them. it makes it really hard to turn since... the diff is locked together, defeating the purpose of the diff lol...

LSD rear and Locked front end = 100% of the available traction and pretty much unstoppable. its so fun.

but also: pretty bad for road driving, lots of tire wear in turns because wheels spin at same speed...
And, the weld might break, when turning on roads?!

no risk of that with the two piece axle. like i said as long as its not in four wheel drive the front diff acts just like a regular differential because the two axle halves are not joined together. Also the rear is only a LSD so it only locks when there is tire slippage and turning doesnt create enough for it to lock...

Still need to figure out the pictures thing.. Maybe I can talk my mom into letting me into her office after hours one night and I'l get them scanned in...

Anyway... i got a new job that pays MUCH more than my previous so now I have money to dump into the Jeep and make it a weekend toy. New goodies that I ordered today;

Rock Sliders, will allow me to slide over rocks I am too low to just climb over and offer better rocker panel protection. I need these cuz I ALWAYS get hung up on rocks or smash my rockers into them.

4.5" rear lift leaf packs and 1.5" lift shacles will lift my rear end to 6" over stock and allow me to fit 33" tires in the rear

2" coil spring spacers, combined with the 3" lift coils I already have will lift me to 5" over stock in the front and allow me to fit 33" tires in the front. (I want the rear a little higher to compensate for extra weight when we go out, I load A LOT of gear into my jeep... its got more cargo room than the TJ/YJ/CJ's that go with us... so I end up with a lot of gear)

Thats all I ordered today, but next week I'm getting new wheels and tires and an exhaust. Also I am going to order fully adjustable upper and lower control arms to allow my suspension to move more freely and not bind.

This thing is finally coming together! Im so excited! Hopefully it will be ready for colorado fest in september! Hopefully the local jeep club will decide to make another run to moab this summer and I can go do some hardcore wheelin...

Still no pics... I just need to break down and buy a scanner or somethin...

anyway My sliders FINALLY came in I hope to have those installed by the close of tomorrow... I got one about halfway on... then it got dark... lol... Still waiting on my rear leafs... I had some stuff come up so i never did get my exhaust or wheels and tires... but shes coming together slowly...

last weekend I took her to the lake and pulled a Suburban WITH boat ATTACHED out of the sand ( a big boat too)... heh the guy said my little jeep couldnt do it... I pulled it out and up to solid ground about 100yds+ away... made $30 too...

lol...

hehe great story... Smiley would have loved to have seen that !!

I remember driving through Australia in my Landcruiser, suddenly there was a floodway coming, and I saw this little Daihatsu Jeep waiting on the other side of the road..
Cranked my Landcruiser up, put it back in 2nd gear, and just blew through the floodway (full of water ofcourse).
Almost stalled in the middle (didn't have a snorkel, and was almost 1meter deep), but it kept on going! Had a spray of a couple meters high on the sides!
The guy in the Daihatsu was just staring, as we drove off into the horizon Evil

So y'all are probably wondering what the jeep has been up to... or not lol...

The clutch went out on me $750 for that. The day After I got it back from that extravaganza the ignition switch went out... Then after I got it back from that... The brake lights went out and I could not find the problem... Nor could my mechanic... So he jerry-wired it up and got them back lol... The day I got it back from that... I went and did some of this

Thats pretty shallow for where I crossed later... I croseed just to the right of that and it came halfwayup the grill... I was kinda scared of hydro locking it but my intake is high enough i guess lol... Boy were the diffs full of water though lol...

Im putting all my money nto the passat so this little fella is being neglected on mods for a while lol oh well...
