Title: rear trailing arm bushings - bmw e30 Post by: Jeff Seabrook on Saturday, February 04, 2006 - 04:08 AM I've been considering doing this, just to do it - plus, I hear an annoying click sometimes when I hit a bump from the left rear of the car - usually get body roll, or a sinking feeling when taking right turns, but it's totally flat on left turns...
I'm thinking my trailing arm bushings are starting to go - and It's a bitch project, but I'm considering doing it - any advice from anybody before I decide to to it ( will be using eurethane bushings when/if I do this ) Title: Re: rear trailing arm bushings - bmw e30 Post by: KipInOmaha on Wednesday, February 08, 2006 - 01:33 PM Jeff,
http://www.unofficialbmw.com/e30/suspension/rear_subframe_bushings/e30_trailing_arm_removal.html Might help. I am getting ready to do: Tokico Strut/Shock and Spring kit. Title: Re: rear trailing arm bushings - bmw e30 Post by: Jeff Seabrook on Wednesday, February 08, 2006 - 11:17 PM pic's don't show up on that link?
I found the problem - it's the rear left shock mount - seems it has separated 100% on the inside, where the shaft for the bolt comes through - the trailing arm bushings are fine. doesn't take long to replace, but, it's an expensive item. Title: Re: rear trailing arm bushings - bmw e30 Post by: Jeff Seabrook on Wednesday, February 08, 2006 - 11:20 PM actually, they are less than $15.00 each - I'll get 2 and drop them in.
Title: Re: rear trailing arm bushings - bmw e30 Post by: Jeff Seabrook on Thursday, February 09, 2006 - 02:06 AM Was under the car looking at the rear sway bar - Everything on the suspension looks good to me, but I want to upgrade the parts - with some eurethane bushings - I just want a tigher ride in the back, getting the car ready to run at Sebring at one of the PBOC track events. I still want it to be drivable on streets, without rattling my jaw out - so far, the ride is pretty good, doesn't bounce around out of control, rides quiet and smooth.
Title: Re: rear trailing arm bushings - bmw e30 Post by: Jeff Seabrook on Thursday, June 01, 2006 - 10:12 PM btw - it wasn't the rear shock mount making the clicking - it was the rear left wheel bearing - after the install of the subframe/trailing arm bushings, tightening the axle nut fixed the problem 100%.
Now, the next part to my car. front/rear sway bars, urethane bushings and front camber plates. or jim conforti chip and a cone air filter eliminating the airbox before the MAS? I'm leaning toward gaining about 15 hp, but... I really want my suspension complete. Title: Re: rear trailing arm bushings - bmw e30 Post by: modifiede30 on Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 03:32 PM actually, they are less than $15.00 each - I'll get 2 and drop them in. Just a word of caution for stock replacements, the problem you encountered is very typical of stock shock mounts. I'd suggest an upgrade when you have time. You can buy heavy duty versions for much less than the aluminum and urethane ones and they'll last much longer than stock. As for the other mods you've mentioned, the 15hp will do nothing for your track times if the suspension and breaking isn't up to par. Remember the chronology for modifying a car for track use, stop, turn, go..... Title: Re: rear trailing arm bushings - bmw e30 Post by: Jeff Seabrook on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 - 12:00 AM I have the stop down perfect, suspension is nearly complete - I'll be on the track this summer to see how well the car is, and the suspension will be done by Winterfest - 2 1/2 years of work on the car now, and as I know it now, it has paid off so big. It still amazes me, honestly, how you can make a car that handles so well, perform so much better - it's simply amazing.
Title: Re: rear trailing arm bushings - bmw e30 Post by: Jeff Seabrook on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 - 12:02 AM oh, 6 days after that above post, on June 10th, I installed bilstein sport shocks...it's on another post. and by far, the $450.00 it cost for the shocks, the most expensive upgrade I have ever done.

What about your next project? anything on your mind? Title: Re: rear trailing arm bushings - bmw e30 Post by: modifiede30 on Wednesday, June 21, 2006 - 10:56 AM What springs are you running with the Bilsteins?
Title: Re: rear trailing arm bushings - bmw e30 Post by: Jeff Seabrook on Monday, June 26, 2006 - 10:30 PM e30 m3 stock springs.
also, I know the order to mod a car, depends on the person. stop, turn, go is right - that's the first thing I told Jeff Carter, owns www.netmusique .com and drives a Z4 - he was wondering why I said to upgrade the woah pedal before the go pedal...It's just how I think it should be done.
