MONTEREY, Calif. (Oct. 16, 2004) – BimmerWorld drivers James Clay, of Blacksburg, Va., Matt Richmond, of Mooresville, N.C., and Seth Thomas, of Cumming, Ga., qualified ninth, 14th and 18th, respectively, Saturday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, in preparation for Sunday’s SCCA SPEED World Challenge Touring Car season finale.
Clay, who is coming off his first-career SPEED Touring Car podium finish, hopes to duplicate that effort in Sunday’s season finale. However, if Clay is to accomplish that feat, he will have to pilot his No. 36 BimmerWorld/Ground Control/Wheel Chair Foundation BMW 325i to the front from his ninth spot on the grid. Clay turned in a qualifying lap of 1:39.609 (80.884 mph).
“It’s not bad,” Clay said of his starting position. “Although, I don’t know that I a real happy with it. We were working on our issues and dialing in our suspension all weekend. During the qualifying session, all of a sudden the track was very different and it kind of caught us by surprise. So, we made the best of it and did fairly well. It’s [the car] in the top 10, which is good.
“Since it is the last race of the year, I expect a lot of attrition and I do expect a pretty tough race,” Clay added. “I think that there is going to be a lot of movement in the field.”

Weather: Sunny, dry. Temp: Air 28°C, Track 32-34°C, Humidity 74-79%
Suzuka (JAP) The BMW WilliamsF1 Team today achieved their third podium finish of the season with Ralf Schumacher finishing second after driving a text book style race. Team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya managed to turn grid position 13 into two championship points. Previous podium finishes for the team in 2004 were when Montoya came second in Kuala Lumpur and third in Imola.
Ralf Schumacher: 2nd Chassis: FW26 07 Best time: 1:33.467 min (lap 23, 3rd overall) The start went ok and I was surprised I was able to follow Michael. I pitted four laps earlier than he did, so he was obviously heavier. But after the pit stop I got stuck in traffic and when you are fighting at the back it is always difficult. Our car was good today. We chose the right strategy and the result speaks for itself. We had a good overall weekend considering the good starting position I achieved. We also widened the gap to McLaren which is important. Now I am happy to go back home and celebrate with my family.

QUALIFYING
Weather: Hot - Ambient temperature 36ºC - Track temperature 48ºC.
Dubai, 7 October, 2004: Andy Priaulx wrote his name into the history books in Dubai by taking pole for the first FIA ETCC race to be run on the new Dubai Autodrome that officially opens this week. Andy's BMW Team Great Britain BMW 320i was over half a second quicker than the privateer Alfa Romeo of Luca Rangoni, while third was the works Alfa of Gabriele Tarquini.
Andy was delighted with his first ETCC pole of the year and commented: "I was fairly certain yesterday that we could have a good qualifying if we got everything together and we have done that. It was just a question of doing a really fast, clean and tidy lap so I could get the best out of the car. We experimented a lot with the set up. I didn't know what time I could do, but I knew we could be quick. I am not worrying about the championship, I am just going to go out and try and win as many races as I can and let the championship take care of itself."

JEREZ TEST 28th - 30th September 2004
Summary The BMW WilliamsF1 Team completed a three day test at the Jerez de la Frontera circuit in southern Spain today. Official test driver, Antonio Pizzonia, was scheduled to test for the three days but was sidelined due to an ankle injury sustained while in China. Consequently, Olivier Beretta, who drove for the French Larrousse team in 1994 and who has intermittently tested for the BMW WilliamsF1 Team since 2002, was brought in to partner Marc Gené for the first day of the test. Ralf Schumacher subsequently replaced Olivier for the remaining two days.
Ralf, Marc and Olivier completed a combined total of 482 laps of the Jerez circuit, a distance of 2,134 kilometers over the three day period. The BMW WilliamsF1 Team will return to the test track on 12th October at Jerez.
Tim Newton (Test Team Manager, WilliamsF1) Under clear Spanish skies, the team has spent the last three days concentrating on set-up work and tyre evaluations in preparation for the last two races of the season. Ralf spent most of his laps working on tyre testing but he also carried out some practice starts and pit stops. Marc also put in a lot of time with Michelin but concentrating mainly on development work. He also concentrated on systems checks. All in all, we've had a very productive test which we hope will stand us in good stead for Suzuka and Brazil.
Mario Theissen (BMW Motorsport Director)
We had a very good test. We covered a lot of mileage and we managed to rectify the problem we experienced with our starts in the last race. Furthermore, we made some progress with the traction control system and the engine.

Weather: Sunny, dry. Temp: Air 27-29°C, Track 34-36°C, Humidity 62-72%
Shanghai (CHI). The BMW WilliamsF1 Team collected four valuable points in today's Premiere of the Chinese Grand Prix with Juan Pablo Montoya achieving fifth place. Ralf Schumacher could not reach the chequered flag due to an accident on lap 37.
Juan Pablo Montoya: 5th Chassis: FW26 05 Best time: 1:33.108 min (lap 34, 5th overall) My start wasn't too bad and I was able to pass Panis but then I went to the inside and it was so dirty that it was like stopping and everybody passed me back. I tried to regain my position and I overtook Jacques Villeneuve twice but I didn't have enough traction and he just passed me back. It was real fun! In the first part of the race I was stuck in traffic, but the second part was better. I was quite close to Sato but I made a mistake before the pit-stop and it cost me a little but then he made a mistake and I got him back. It's good to have achieved fifth position from where we started and I am glad to have collected some good points for the team.
Ralf Schumacher: Retired on lap 37 Chassis: FW26 07 Best time: 1:33.546 min (lap 31, 9th overall) It's a true pity that my race had an early end. My car had a puncture following contact with Coulthard. He tried to overtake me but I think his move was a bit too optimistic. Anyway, I came into the pits to fix the car which we thought had been damaged but after a careful look, the engineers decided that I could continue the race. However, too much time had elapsed by then and it was too late to get out on track again, because I would have been two laps down. It's a shame, because my race had been good until then and I had been fighting in the top five positions. It's true I had lost a place at the start, but all in all I was in a position to collect some useful points.
