Twin Second Place Finishes Propel Turner Motorsport To Championship Lead
HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY, Homestead, Florida (April 17, 2007) -- Turner Motorsport BMWs scored twin second place finishes in this past weekend's KONI Challenge races at Homestead-Miami Speedway in South Florida. Both the #96 StopTech Brakes/H&R Springs BMW M3 and the #95 H&R Springs/Turner Motorsport BMW 330i scored podiums in their respective classes. Bill Auberlen and Chris Gleason now lead the Grand Sport Driver's Championship heading into the third round of the season. The #97 H&R Springs/Turner Motorsport BMW M3, piloted by Will Turner and Don Salama scored their second-straight top ten finish. Ironically, the winners in both classes were penalized for technical infractions but were allowed to keep their race wins.
Sunday's first race was for the Street Tuner class where the #95 H&R Springs/Turner Motorsport BMW 330i of Adam Burrows and Trevor Hopwood started from the front row in a 35-car field. The Burrows/Hopwood team stayed near the top of the field through the entire 2.5 hour race, never letting the leaders get too far out of sight. Hopwood made a challenge for the lead late in the race after running conservatively for much of his stint to save tires and fuel. The duo scored their first podium in only their second KONI Challenge event and second-straight top ten finish.
Adam Burrows, #95 H&R Springs/Turner Motorsport BMW 330i:
"I would certainly be the first to say that I would have never imagined that we'd be standing in the second spot on the podium this early in the season. Certainly, it's a testament to the awesome job that Turner does. Those cars are prepared so well and their strategy is spot-on. I can't say enough about the drive that Trevor had in the second part of the race. It felt good to qualify like we did, and it feels even better to back it up in the race like we were able to today."
The race-winning Honda was penalized points and prize money after Grand-Am officials found a technical infraction during the post-race inspection. The win is still credited to the Honda team but the Turner Motorsport team claimed the points victory this weekend.
The second 400k race was a wild 2.5 hour event with nine lead changes and five cautions. Rain fell hard near the end of the race which impacted the results. Bill Auberlen led the race before pitting for rain tires on lap 78 but had to pull into the pits just a few minutes later after being tagged in the back bumper. The TMS crew removed the rear bumper and sent him back out into the fray. Auberlen clawed his way back up after the extra pit stop to finish in second place. Were it not for the race ending in a caution period, Auberlen and co-driver Chris Gleason might have scored the win. Write Comment - 0 Comments so far. |

Racing In The KONI Challenge Series Resumes After 2.5 Month Break
HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY, Homestead, Florida (April 10, 2007) -- After a long break racing resumes in the Grand-Am KONI Challenge this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway in South Florida. The Turner Motorsport BMW team has been hard at work after the season-opening round at Daytona in January but is anxious to get back to racing for the next two weekends in Florida and Iowa.
The season opener at Daytona was a successful start to the season for the trio of Turner BMWs - third and tenth place in the Grand Sport class (BMW M3) and seventh place in the Street Tuner class (BMW 330i), with team drivers Bill Auberlen and Chris Gleason leading the way in the #96 Motul Lubricants/H&R Springs BMW M3. With the next round at the Homestead oval speedway, the team is hoping to translate the hard work of the break into more podium finishes in both classes.
Will Turner, team owner and driver, #97 Turner Motorsport/H&R Springs BMW M3:
"We tried to use this break in between rounds 1 and 2 to make progress, big or small, in all areas of our programs. We tested the cars to try out some new ideas and setups, drilled our team in pit stop performance, and studied the data from Daytona and our last race at Homestead (March, 2006). We're ready to go for the wins again and put the Mustangs and Porsches to the test!"
Turner Motorsport will again be fielding a trio of BMWs, piloted by past champions in several forms of road racing. Adam Burrows and Trevor Hopwood will be teaming up in the Street Tuner class in the #95 H&R Springs/Turner Motorsport BMW 330i (the 2006 ST championship-winning car). In the Grand Sport class, Bill Auberlen and Chris Gleason will again share driving duties in the #96 Turner Motorsport/Motul Lubricants BMW M3 (winner of two races in 2006), while Will Turner and Don Salama will pilot the #97 Turner Motorsport/H&R Springs BMW M3 (the 2006 GS class championship car).
This weekend's race schedule has practice sessions and qualifying on Saturday, and the 2.5 hour/400 kilometer races on Sunday, starting at 10:15am for the Street Tuner race and 1:45pm for the Grand Sport class.

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Automatic Racing heads into round two of the KONI Challenge Series this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway, a track where the team has had plenty of success in previous seasons. The team will be aiming for the podium with the Fresh from Florida BMW M3s in one of Florida’s most vibrant agricultural areas.
The KONI Challenge Series has visited Homestead twice since Automatic Racing joined the series in 2002. Both times, Automatic drivers stood on the podium after earning third-place finishes.
Jep Thornton and Jeff Segal will share the No. 09 Automatic Racing/Fresh from Florida BMW M3, which stands out with its grapefruit pink color scheme. In addition to its significance as a local race for Fresh from Florida, Homestead is also Segal’s home track. The University of Miami student will have the chance to sleep in his own bed every night.
Thornton and Segal finished fifth during the season opener at Daytona in January, and Segal is confident about Homestead, where he earned a Ferarri Challenge win in 2003. “Jep’s a lot of fun to work with and he’s a good driver,” he says. “There’s no hassle; everything just seems to work, from our setup to pit stops. Jep’s been on the podium at Homestead, and I’ve got a lot of laps in a lot of cars there.”
The No. 99 Automatic Racing/Fresh from Florida BMW M3 will be co-driven by David Russell and Tom Long. This weekend marks Long’s first visit to Homestead, but he’s encouraged by Automatic’s prior success there. “David will be able to help me a lot, as will (Team Manager) Joe Varde. Automatic has a great history there, so the setup should be spot on from the start,” says Long. “I think it’s exciting to be going to Florida again with the Fresh from Florida M3. We look forward to getting a top finish for the local farmers who will be there to cheer us on.”
Jon Miller and Owen Trinkler will complete the Automatic Racing lineup in the No. 90 Automatic Racing M3, which is sponsored by Weeden Consultants. “I’m excited to get back on track and to get another race under my belt,” says Miller, whose race at Daytona ended early. “Owen and I are optimistic because the track suits our car well and he’s gotten good results there. This will be my first time at Homestead, but it’s part of what being a young driver is about – getting to know these tracks this year.”
Miller grew up in nearby Key Largo before heading to college in Orlando, so he will be staying with his parents during the race weekend and doing some scuba diving in his spare time.
Tim George, Jr. and Pete Argetsinger are once again teaming up in the No. 91 Automatic BMW M3. George graduated from the University of Miami, and he will have friends and family at the track to cheer him on.
Fresh from Florida is a campaign of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services that serves to increase public awareness of the importance of Florida’s agriculture industry, which has an estimated overall economic impact of more than $87 billion annually.
The 400km Grand Sport race will be held on Sunday, April 15th, beginning at 1:45 p.m. Fans can keep up with Automatic Racing online at www.AutomaticRacing.com. More information about Fresh from Florida can be found at www.Florida-Agriculture.com.Write Comment - 0 Comments so far. |

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Tim George, Jr. has plenty of reasons to like Homestead-Miami Speedway. The 26-year-old driver will return to the site of his first career podium this weekend, driving the No. 91 Automatic Racing BMW M3 in Sunday’s KONI Challenge Grand Sport race.
George got his start in racing with the Skip Barber Southern Series, and his first podium finish was a second place at Homestead. He later earned a third-place finish at the 2.3-mile course.
In addition to his racing success, George is also a graduate of the University of Miami. He lived in Miami for five years, and Homestead feels like a home track.
George and Pete Argetsinger are teaming up again for the race, and their No. 91 BMW will carry new sponsorship from SexCells Gear ( www.SexCellsGear.com ). A high-school friend of George’s, Remy Colin, co-founded the apparel company with Grant Desmarias as an escape from the cubicle life. The customizable apparel has a bold look and a wicked sense of humor.
Gleukos Sports Drink (www.Gleukos.com) is also one of George’s personal sponsors. Gleukos is a glucose-based, electrolyte enhanced drink for athletes, and George utilizes it in preparation for his long stints in KONI Challenge races.
George and Argetsinger had a tough opening round at Daytona, where George had the task of making up lost laps after early mechanical problems put the No. 91 Automatic BMW behind.
Now, George is ready to turn the tables at one of his favorite tracks. “I’m looking forward to a track that I know better than Daytona and where I have such a good history,” he says. “I think we have the car and the prior experience to get a good finish.
George may have started in open-wheel cars, but he prefers sports car racing and thinks the M3 has more potential at Homestead. “Once I get more seat time in the M3 I’ll be able to get more aggressive,” says George. “This weekend will be a chance to get some laps in on a familiar track, and I’ll have a lot of friends and family coming to support me.”

Alton, VA - Team KMA Drivers Julia Landauer, Jeffrey Petriello and Mike Hill took to the track this weekend at the second Official test for the 2007 Formula BMW USA Championship.
Jeffrey Petriello posted the fastest time of the second session during the final day and finished 4th fastest overall for the two day test, while Julia Landauer posted the 4th quickest time of the final session of the second day and finished 8th fastest overall. Mike Hill missed almost all of the first day due to an engine failure and finished 15th fastest overall for the weekend.
"It was a successful test for our drivers who have never seen this track before this weekend," stated Jon Lewis, Team KMA co-owner. "We put a lot of miles on these cars this weekend, more than we would have liked and it was unfortunate that Mike's engine blew apart on the morning of the first day. These engines are pretty reliable and it was a surprise to everyone."
"The crew worked a tremendous amount of hours," Lewis continued. "We were the first one's at the track each day and the last to leave. But, we needed to get Mike out there on Sunday. Missing the first day at a new track put him behind a little, but he steadily gained speed throughout the day on Sunday. It sure wasn't representative of his ability and speed by any means."
Team KMA Racing's Indy Pro Series driver Robbie Pecorari was on hand to assist the Team's Formula BMW drivers. "It was very beneficial having Robbie at the track with us," said Team KMA's other co-owner Ingo Strackerjan. "Having someone of Robbie's talents and experience to guide our drivers will help us get them up to speed quicker, which is important in this Championship due to the limited amount of track time we have available at events."
Team KMA heads to Houston for the next Official Test session on April 21-22.

Makela and Ericsson on pole for Formula BMW season openers. Brands Hatch, 31 March, 2007. Valle Makela (Nexa Racing) and Rookie Marcus Ericsson (Fortec Motorsport) both enjoyed a great start to the season claiming a pole position apiece for the Formula BMW UK Championship 2007 opening rounds on the Indy circuit at Brands Hatch tomorrow. Henry Surtees (Carlin Motorsport) sealed two second positions, topping the Rookies for Round 1.
After an extremely wet practice day, the track dried out just in time for the first qualifying sessions of 2007 and, for the first time, the line-up of 18 young drivers were able to see how they measured up on the grid.
21-year old, Valle Makela's experience shone through as he got straight on the pace in the first session to claim pole for the opening round tomorrow morning, followed by fourth for Round 2.
After claiming fourth and pole position, a clearly delighted Ericsson commented, "I was naturally a little nervous before the first qualifying session as it's all very new, but by the second session I was feeling much more confident as the result showed." The youngster, who is one of the least experienced racers on the grid, put in a solid second drive to clinch pole for Round 2 by only 0.008 seconds.
Henry Surtees also made a great start to his campaign. The 16-year old Rookie put his car on the front row for both of tomorrow's races. "Today's sessions went well and it's great to be on the front row for my first Formula BMW races," he commented. "I'm definitely going to go for it from there!"
2006 Rookie Cup Champion Henry Arundel (Fortec Motorsport) claimed two second row spots to open his 2007 challenge. "I'm happy to be in third for both races, it's a good spot and I'm hopeful I can do a lot from there," he said.
The close sessions clearly showed the abundance of talent for this year's championship. With less than a second between the top 13 for both races, tomorrow looks set to provide some very exciting racing as the new crop of drivers take to the grid for the first time this year.Write Comment - 0 Comments so far. |
