2006 FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) Rounds 1 and 2 - 01st/02nd April 2006 - Preview
BMW begins mission to defend title in Monza.
Munich, 27th March 2006. The new season of the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) gets underway this weekend. The first stage of touring car racing's biggest prize takes place at the "Autodromo Nazionale di Monza". For the first time in 2006, the BMW national team drivers will race against the competition in two sprint races.
The drivers already gave fans a taste of what is to come in the 20 races in Europe, Asia, South and Central America on 21st and 22nd March. During the "Media Days" in Monza, the teams ran a two-day testing programme. Reigning champion Andy Priaulx (GBR) of BMW Team UK topped the timesheets after setting a time of 2:00.688 minutes. However, the BMW Team Germany drivers Dirk Müller (GER) and Jörg Müller (GER), as well as Alessandro Zanardi (ITA) and Marcel Costa (ESP) of BMW Team Italy-Spain, also made a good impression on the track with the highest full throttle percentage of the race calendar.
The quintet will be using the new BMW 320si this season. The race car was developed by BMW based on the road car edition of the same name. The requisite power is provided by the 275bhp 4-cylinder in-line engine. After the wins in 2005 at the Drivers' Championship, the Manufacturers' Championship and the Independents Trophy, BMW is once again aiming to dominate the front end of the grid in this FIA WTCC season.
Mario Theissen (BMW Motorsport Director): "I am convinced the BMW 320si will carry on the BMW success story in touring car racing. This year's WTCC should prove even more exciting than in 2005. There are new manufacturers involved, the field of participants will expand further and there are some new venues in the calendar. Overall, the World Touring Car Championship offers everything a race series needs. With our three national teams and the new BMW 320si, we are in a good position to be up there with the front-runners again."Write Comment - 0 Comments so far. |

BimmerWorld Rolls Into St. Petersburg To The Power of Three Championship contending BMW team sets sights on the podium
Radford, Virginia (March 27th 2006): With Sebring in the history books, BimmerWorld Racing drivers, James Clay, Seth Thomas and Paul Goldman, will take the fight for the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car championship to St. Petersburg, Sunday, April 2nd. The race is part of the IndyCar Racing League Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
While development continues on the BimmerWorld E90 BMW 325i’s, scheduled to debut for round 3 at Mid-Ohio, the team will use their successful E46 BMW 325’s.
BimmerWorld owner, James Clay, talked about the new E90 and his company’s commitment to doing things right: “BimmerWorld has a reputation of always presenting well-prepared equipment to the grid. As the first US team racing the new E90s in North America, it is extremely important that our cars properly represent BMW and BimmerWorld. With that in mind, we’ve set round 3 in Mid-Ohio as our target date to introduce the BimmerWorld E90 325.”
Seth Thomas, [#38 BimmerWorld BMW 325i] in his third World Challenge Series season, talked about his outstanding run at Sebring. “Sebring was a great week for the BimmerWorld team,” said Seth. “We finished with two drivers in the top-10 and I think Paul would have easily been in the top-15 if not for his misfortune on the starting line.”
Thomas had the crowd on their feet with his outstanding start at Sebring. Seth found himself pressuring eventual winner, Bill Auberlen, in the early laps and battling with Randy Pobst for second. Seth finished his day sixth.Write Comment - 0 Comments so far. |

Preview. Munich/Hinwil, 24 March 2006. The Formula One circus can look forward to rather cooler conditions in the next grand prix of the year following the sweltering heat of the first two races of 2006. Normally the season curtain-raiser, the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne has been given a later slot in the calendar this time around and will take place on 2 April as the third of 18 world championship races.
Since last weekend's Malaysian GP, the BMW Sauber F1 Team has been preparing for the race in Australia with testing at the Paul Ricard circuit in France. Work has focused on making further improvements to reliability and building on the race pace the cars have recently shown.
Nick Heidfeld: "This season's Australian Grand Prix will certainly have a rather different feel about it. To start with, the race has been put back due to the Commonwealth Games, so there won't be that extra buzz you get when it's the first race of the season. And because it's later in the year, it won't be as hot as usual either - the race is a month later than normal and Melbourne will be getting really quite autumnal. The Albert Park circuit is nice to drive, but also a demanding one for the drivers. Because it isn't a permanent race track, there isn't much grip at the start of the weekend. The situation improves with each lap as the cars lay down extra rubber. Australia is my favourite place on the Formula One calendar to travel to and I tend to fly out to Melbourne a few days early to get used to the time difference."
Jacques Villeneuve: "It's always a pleasure to travel to Melbourne, especially if I have bit of time there to relax before the race. I enjoy racing at Albert Park - I like the circuit and am looking forward to the GP. BMW have got a lot of things going on around the grand prix and that in itself will make it an interesting weekend for me. As for our performance, I think the two points we collected in Malaysia show that we can be pretty competitive - and that was psychologically important for the team. Added to which, BMW has proved with my engine that they can react extremely quickly when a problem comes up. There is a very constructive atmosphere within the team. Having said that, the circuit in Australia is another that's very heavy on engines, and this will be my second race with the engine I used in Malaysia. So we'll have to exercise a certain amount of caution during the weekend."Write Comment - 0 Comments so far. |

Day one - Wednesday
Weather conditions: Overcast, damp in the morning, then dry, air: 12-16°C, track: 13-23°C
Number of cars participating: 8 (6 drivers)
Fastest lap overall: 1:04.466 min (lap 114), Heikki Kovalainen, Renault R26, Michelin
Robert Kubica: Chassis / engine: BMW Sauber F1.06-06 / BMW P86 V8 Test kilometres today: 550 km (144 laps) Fastest lap: 1:04.970 min (lap 81)
In the morning, Robert did some starts to optimise the respective settings, then continued with an aerodynamic validation programme. He then did a long-run to gain specific data on cooling. In the afternoon, the team did a tyre test programme for Michelin that revealed some interesting results. Overall it was a very productive test day.
What comes next: Tomorrow, Nick Heidfeld will take over and do preparation work in view of the Imola Grand Prix, and he will continue with the aerodynamic validation programme.Write Comment - 0 Comments so far. |
