2006 FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) Round 5 and 6 - 20th/21st May 2006 - Preview
Priaulx looks forward to the WTCC debut at Brands Hatch.
Munich, 15th May 2006. This weekend, the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit will celebrate its debut as a World Touring Car Championship venue, with the series holding rounds five and six at the 4.22-kilometre track located in the South East of England. Andy Priaulx (GBR) is currently the championship leader with 21 points and naturally he will be trying to add further points to his tally during his home event at Brands Hatch. However, a difficult task lies ahead of the reigning world champion and BMW Team UK - RBM, headed by Bart Mampaey (BEL). Following race wins in Monza and in Magny-Cours, Priaulx is required to take 70kg of additional weight on board his BMW 320si WTCC.
His competitors from the other BMW national teams are keen on seizing the opportunity to challenge the local hero's lead in the overall championship standings. The BMW Team Germany drivers are, however, also forced to drive with handicap weight aboard their cars. Jörg Müller (GER), who leaped to third position in the standings by twice finishing runner-up in Magny-Cours, will start with 45kg of additional weight. His team-mate, Dirk Müller (GER), returns into the cockpit of the BMW 320si WTCC after his appearance as Formula One driver in the BMW Sauber F1 Team's Pit Lane Park in Spain, and will have to enter the two sprint races with 35kg of handicap weight. On the other hand, BMW Team Italy-Spain drivers Alessandro Zanardi (ITA) and Marcel Costa (ESP) can look forward to racing without any extra ballast. BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen will attend both races since Formula One is enjoying a free weekend.
Following the WTCC races, Priaulx is scheduled to take part in two more events in his native country: At the British Grand Prix in Silverstone, which takes place on 11th June, the 31-year-old will drive the car of the BMW Sauber F1 Team in the specially erected BMW Sauber F1 Team Pit Lane Park. Less than a month later, from 7th to 9th July, Priaulx will make his debut appearance at the classic Goodwood Festival of Speed. At the wheel of the Formula One car he will thrill the crowd once more.Write Comment - 0 Comments so far. |

Weather: sunny and dry, 26-27°C air, 41-43°C track Barcelona (ESP). BMW Sauber F1 Team driver Nick Heidfeld qualified tenth in Barcelona. His team-mate, Jacques Villeneuve, will start from the back of the grid with a fresh engine for the Spanish Grand Prix.
Nick Heidfeld: BMW Sauber F1.06-02/BMW P86 Qualifying: 10th, 1:17.144 min (3rd practice 3rd, 1:16.057 min) I am happy to be in the top ten as the lap times are quite close. I think it would have been difficult to beat the other cars in front of us, and even though I lost some time with Ralf in front, honestly I don't think it would have changed anything regarding my position. The set up was fine on one lap, and I hope we can see the same tomorrow over a race distance. The balance of the car changed, and it was quite different for all three outings.
Jacques Villeneuve: BMW Sauber F1.06-03/BMW P86 Qualifying: 14th, 1:15.847 min (3rd practice 17th, 1:17.924 min) The first run went very easily and the balance was very good, but then the wind picked up and the car's balance changed. We still concentrated for the set-up on what we need for the race with high fuel and all that. We were not at the optimum for qualifying, but I was still expecting better than that.
Mario Theissen (BMW Motorsport Director): Once again it was very tight. After the first part of qualifying there was less than a second between first and 14th places. In the second part the first 11 drivers were within one second of each other. For us we had different strategies. It was clear Jacques would not be able to start in the top ten because of the engine change. For Nick we concentrated on getting him into the top ten, which is exactly what he achieved. On his first lap he got stuck in traffic which cost him quite a lot of time. What his starting position will be worth compared to the opposition we will see tomorrow at the first pit stop. Technically the cars ran problem free. As Jacques is starting from the last row anyway, we will fit another fresh engine to give him the best possible chances for here and Monaco.
Willy Rampf (Technical Director Chassis): Getting one car into the third qualifying session is positive as this gives us a good platform to start the race from. How good this tenth place will end up being we cannot say, as we don't know everyone's different strategies. Jacques was very good in first qualifying. Not doing so well in the second session hasn't played a very big role in his weekend, as he has to go back ten places anyway because we have changed his engine.Write Comment - 0 Comments so far. |

Houston, Tx. - May 13, 2006... For the second time in as many races BMW Team PTG failed to finish as both BMW M3s experienced mechanical problems and were forced to retire from last night's American Le Mans Series Lone Star Grand Prix in Houston, Texas. Starting ninth, the No. 21 BMW Team PTG M3 of Bill Auberlen and Joey Hand completed only 50 laps around the 1.69-mile temporary street circuit after two long stops in the garage for repairs to the brake system.
The No. 22 BMW Team PTG M3 of Justin Marks and Martin Jensen started seventh and was racing in the fifth position before being forced to retire on lap 25 with a driveshaft failure.
"Although my race was a short one, I was happy with the pace of the No. 22 M3," said Marks. "We made progress in finding the setup here. Unfortunately, just after I passed for the fifth position the driveshaft coupling failed on a downshift."
"We have definitely been fighting a brake gremlin here," said Auberlen. "We thought we had it fixed, but on the second lap of the race the pedal began to go long again."
Hand added, "After I reentered the race I knew the brake problem was not fixed. We brought the car back to the garage one more time and replaced more components. I rejoined, looking to collect some points, but was finally forced to retire. Now it's no stopping for the crew as they must fix the problem for Mid-Ohio."
The Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio will host the third round of the season on May 21st with the two-hour-and-forty-five-minute American Le Mans at Mid-Ohio. The race will be broadcast on CBS television beginning at 1 p.m.Write Comment - 0 Comments so far. |

Weather: sunny and dry in the afternoon, 19-23°C air, 21-42°C track Barcelona (ESP). It was a trouble-free first practice day in Spain for all three BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers. As usual Robert Kubica had a heavy work load and completed 55 laps, while Nick Heidfeld and Jacques Villeneuve got used to the Barcelona track and its changing conditions, which saw rain in the morning and bright sunshine in the afternoon.
Nick Heidfeld: BMW Sauber F1.06-02/BMW P86 1st Practice: No time / 2nd Practice: 12th, 1:17.622s We had a trouble free day with everything running smoothly, and my work included the tyre comparisons.
Robert Kubica: BMW Sauber F1.06-05/BMW P86 1st Practice: 4th, 1:16.628s / 2nd Practice: 13th, 1:17.844s In the morning the track was wet, so we had to wait for it to dry and there was no grip. We concentrated on tyre testing, and this went pretty well. We need to be sure of the right decisions for the race and we have come to some conclusions, so that is important. In the second free practice the track had a lot of rubber so I got a lot of understeer, but I had to complete my programme so could not adjust the car. Obvioulsy the more rubber that is laid down the better the track will get, and so tomorrow it should be pretty good.
Jacques Villeneuve: BMW Sauber F1.06-03/BMW P86 1st Practice: No time / 2nd Practice: 16th, 1:18.007s It is very windy so the track is very different to when we were here testing, and as well as that it is a lot hotter. I did a couple of runs. One was with high fuel for the race, as I am going to have to start from the back, so I have been concentrating on that. This is not a good overtaking track so it will be tough to move to the front.
Mario Theissen (BMW Motorsport Director): We completed our scheduled programme without any problems, and from the information have been able to base the decisions for our tyre choice and car set up. Today we witnessed Barcelona's well known characteristic of conditions that change quite often and at short notice. This affects the temperatures, rubber on the track and the wind.
Willy Rampf (Technical Director Chassis): We are satisfied with our lap times and performance and had no mechanical problems. Our programme contained tyre comparison and race preparation work. It was quite a varied programme despite the fact all the teams test here quite a lot. We have to do this because the track changes frequently during the day. We now have a lot of data to check, but I think we are well prepared for the weekend. Write Comment - 0 Comments so far. |

Houston, TX. - May 11, 2006... Today's two 50-minute practice sessions did not prove to be enough time for BMW Team PTG to come to grips with the temporary Houston circuit today as the team qualified its two M3s eighth and ninth in the GT2 field for tomorrow's American Le Mans Series Lone Star Grand Prix. Only Justin Marks, driving the No. 22 BMW Team PTG M3, took to the track for the 20-minute qualifying session. His time of 1:13.186 minutes around the 1.7-mile track was his quickest of the day, but was only fast enough for the eighth starting position.
"I am disappointed that we are not faster, but I know we used our time wisely today and definitely made progress," said Marks, who will co-drive with Martin Jensen. "I believe we will continue to improve and am cautiously optimistic that we will see a good finish in the race tomorrow. Anything can happen in a street race like this."
The No. 21 BMW Team PTG M3 of Bill Auberlen and Joey Hand experienced a mechanical problem during the last practice session and did not qualify.
PTG owner Tom Milner commented on the decision not to qualify the No. 21 M3, "We had some sort of problem with either the suspension or the brakes. We are not sure exactly what it is yet and these walls here can quickly turn a small problem into a much bigger one. It is better to be safe than sorry."
The two-hour-and-forty-five-minute Lone Star Grand Prix is scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m. local time tomorrow. The race will be broadcast on CBS television at 1:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 13th.Write Comment - 0 Comments so far. |

European Grand Prix – Race, Sunday – 07.05.06 Weather: sunny and dry, Air 20°C, Track 38-39°C
Nürburg (DEU). After excellent starts and a promising first part of the race, at the end of the day the race pace of the BMW Sauber F1.06 was not good enough. Jacques Villeneuve came eighth in the European Grand Prix at the Nürburigng and scored one point for the BMW Sauber F1 Team. Nick Heidfeld finished tenth.
Jacques Villeneuve: 8th BMW Sauber F1.06-03/BMW P86 Fastest Lap: 1:34.037 min on lap 38 (12th fastest overall) Overall a good result for us. It was very close with Fisichella and was a good battle. With the car he had I thought he would overtake me, but he stayed behind until the second pit stop so that was good. Coming out of the pits each time with a high fuel load the car was hard to drive, but once we got the tyres used up the rhythm was good as the older the tyres were the better the car felt.
Nick Heidfeld: 10th BMW Sauber F1.06-05/BMW P86 Fastest Lap: 1:34.035 min on lap 47 (11th fastest overall) I made a super start and was able to make up four positions in the first corner. I then tried very hard but I couldn’t keep up with the pace of the drivers in front of me. I was struggling with the balance of the car, which is a problem I have had since the Imola race and I don’t have a solution yet. We have to analyse this as a matter of urgency.
Mario Theissen (BMW Motorsport Director): From our point of view the race reflected the rest of the weekend. We were simply not fast enough. At least Jacques had the speed to stay in the points for two thirds of the race, but during and after the second pit stop he could not keep up the same pace as some of his competitors. Nick was able to make up some positions in the first corners, but later in the race he also came under pressure. However, after a relatively poor performance on Friday, we can be satisfied with this one championship point. There were no technical problems at all in the race. Congratulations to Michael Schumacher and Ferrari for a very convincing victory.
Willy Rampf (Technical Director Chassis): Both our drivers made excellent starts and made up places in the early stages. For our team it was a very exciting race because we were involved in battles for position the whole time. Both cars ran without even the smallest problem over the entire weekend, so the championship point is a well deserved reward. Write Comment - 0 Comments so far. |
