  • WTCC - ROUNDS 13 & 14 - BRUNN - PREVIEW
2006 FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) Rounds 13 and 14 - 02nd/03rd September 2006 - Preview World Touring Car Championship makes its Czech comeback. Munich, 28th August 2006. For the time being at least, the BMW national teams in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) don't have to cope with further overseas races. Following the rounds in Brazil and Mexico, the series returns to European soil this weekend, to contest rounds 13 and 14 at Brno in the Czech Republic. The World Touring Car Championship made a stop at the Czech circuit back in 1987. And as in those days, the BMW drivers are once again regarded as joint favourites. However, they will have to battle it out with competitive opponents. A glance at the standings proves that the championship is extremely close this year, with the top six drivers split by just six points in the rankings. Prior to the Brno weekend, BMW Team UK driver Andy Priaulx (GBR) holds the runner-up position with 46 points after James Thompson (GB...

  • BMW SAUBER F1 TEAM - TURKISH GP - RACE
Weather: Dry and sunny, 36-37°C Air, 42-53°C Track Istanbul (TUR). The best starting positions of the year - fifth and eighth - gave the BMW Sauber F1 Team confidence that it could score points today but it left Istanbul empty handed. The tyre choice for Robert Kubica was the wrong one and the best he could achieve was 12th. Nick Heidfeld was the victim of a first corner incident, which caused him to pit for a new nose, and his race was effectively over so the best he could do was finish 14th. Robert Kubica: 12th BMW Sauber F1.06-05/BMW P86 My start was quite okay, but at the first corner Giancarlo Fisichella spun so I had to go wide with Rubens Barrichello and lost a lot of positions. I was then able to overtake some drivers but the Safety Car came out and we changed tyres. The second stint, like the first, was not that bad, although there was too much graining on the tyres. On the first lap of the last stint the tyres were already graining and the pace was massively too slow....

  • BMW SAUBER F1 TEAM - GP TURKEY - SEBASTIAN VETTEL TO DRIVE THE THIRD BMW SAUBER F1.06
Munich/Hinwil, 23 August 2006. The BMW Sauber F1 Team will be back to its full complement of three cars for the Turkish Grand Prix: next to Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica, 19-year-old Sebastian Vettel (Heppenheim, GER) will be out on the track on Friday at the wheel of the third BMW Sauber F1.06. BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen: "We are giving Sebastian the chance to prove what he is already capable of. Sebastian is the next in line in the squad of young drivers, and at the age of just 19 has already carved out a long and successful track record in karting, Formula BMW and Formula 3. Of course Istanbul isn't going to be a walkover for him. Sebastian has far fewer F1 test kilometres on the clock compared to Robert when he joined us. That has to be borne in mind. We will do all we can to support him." In Istanbul Sebastian will be taking over the job that Robert Kubica did during the first twelve GP weekends in 2006. Since the Hungarian Grand Prix, the Pole has been a t...

  • BMW TEAM PTG M3s FINISH 2ND AND 6TH IN GENERAC 500 AT ROAD AMERICA
Elkhart Lake, Wis. - August 20, 2006... Bill Auberlen and Joey Hand co-drove the No. 21 BMW Team PTG M3 to a season’s best second place in the GT2 class of the American Le Mans Series’ Generac 500 today at Road America. The duo completed 71 laps of the venerable 4.048-mile Road America circuit, finishing only 4.237 seconds behind the class-winning Porsche. Auberlen and Hand both led during the two-hour-and-forty-five minute contest – Hand relinquishing the lead only three laps from the end after a fierce battle with winner Jorg Bergmeister. Justin Marks and Bryan Sellers, driving the No. 22 BMW Team PTG M3, finished sixth, three laps behind their teammates. Both BMW Team PTG M3s got good starts as the green flag waved for the start of the Generac 500. Auberlen, starting from the sixth starting position in the No. 21 BMW M3, jumped into third on the opening lap of the race. Marks, in the No. 22 M3, moved up to sixth after starting from the rear of the grid following a ...

  • BMW SAUBER F1 TEAM - GP HUNGARY - RACE
Hungarian Grand Prix - Race, Sunday - 06.08.06 Weather: Rain until 13.00, then drying, 17-22°C air, 20-27°C track Budapest (HUN). In its 13th race the new BMW Sauber F1 Team celebrated its first podium. Nick Heidfeld finished third in the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest. After a spectacular race F1 debutant Robert Kubica came seventh in his BMW Sauber F1.06. This result means the BMW Sauber F1 Team has claimed back fifth position in the Constructors' World Championship from Toyota. Nick Heidfeld: 3rd BMW Sauber F1.06-02/BMW P86 This is a fantastic day. Not only for me but for the entire team. Especially as we had a rather low point after the last two races. It is also very good that Robert finished in the points. This result gives all of us enormous motivation. My race was good. I had to be somewhat careful with the tyres to avoid overheating, but I believe this was the case for most of the drivers today. The pit crew did an excellent job. They got me ahead of Coulthard and al...

  • BMW SAUBER F1 TEAM - GP HUNGARY - STATEMENT
Hungarian Grand Prix - Sunday - 06.08.06 The BMW Sauber F1.06 driven in the Hungarian Grand Prix by Robert Kubica was subsequently disqualified. He had finished in seventh place. The Pole and the BMW Sauber Team lose two world championship points. Willy Rampf (Technical Director): "During the post-race technical inspection of the car, it was found to be two kilograms underweight. The reason for this is that the intermediate tyres on Robert's car were in use for 51 laps and had sustained unexpected high rubber wear. That was the case above all in the final stages of the race on a dry track. There's no ambiguity about being underweight, we just have to accept it. The FIA made it clear that there is no question of any implied intention."...

  • BMW SAUBER F1 TEAM AND JACQUES VILLENEUVE PART COMPANY BY MUTUAL CONSENT
BMW Sauber F1 Team and Jacques Villeneuve part company by mutual consent. Hinwil, 7 August 2006. Jacques Villeneuve will not be racing with the BMW Sauber F1 Team for the remainder of the 2006 F1 season. Following discussions last week, Jacques Villeneuve and the BMW Sauber F1 Team agreed to terminate their current contract with immediate effect five races ahead of schedule. BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen: "Jacques has performed well for us this year, scoring the Team's first grand prix points in Malaysia, He has made a significant contribution to developing the newly formed BMW Sauber F1 Team and the performance of the car. However, after Jacques' accident in the Hockenheim race the team decided to review its options for next year, including assessing Robert Kubica in a race environment. Our decision to look towards evaluating our driver line up has naturally impacted Jacques' position for the remainder of this season. We fully understand that it is difficult for Jacques ...
