  • Formula BMW Americas Completes First Official Test of 2009 Season
    The sixth season of open-wheel racing’s most complete driver development series officially got underway Monday and Tuesday as the Formula BMW Americas Championship conducted its first official test at Florida’s Palm Beach International Raceway.   The growing roster of drivers and teams from North, Central and South America that will compete in the 2009 Formula BMW Americas Championship came out for two days of spirited testing on the 2.038-mile PBIR road course. The driver lineup featured a good mix of returning competitors and rookie drivers making their first steps into Formula BMW Americas competition, and the time sheets showed that the mix of drivers should make for a strong racing season.   Returning driver Gaby Chaves (EuroInternational) set the fastest time of the final day with a best lap of 1:16.232, while his teammate Michael Lewis was second-quickest, and fastest in the morning session, in what was his first-ever outing in the Formula BMW FB02. ...

    Day three – Thursday   Weather conditions: Poor visibility due to sandstorms.   Circuit length: 5.412 km   Robert Kubica Chassis / engine: BMW Sauber F1.09-02 / BMW 86/9 Test kilometres today: 5,4 (1 lap)   Programme: In a repeat of what happened yesterday, the visibility was still too poor for the medical helicopter to fly. The weather did, however, clear up a little bit so the BMW Sauber F1 Team – along with the other two teams present – prepared for testing by running one installation lap. The BIC officials also started to clear the track of its dust cover.   Unfortunately the weather didn’t change as much as was necessary to run a regular test session. Subsequently there was no green light for the rest of the day. However, from 10 o’clock a sandstorm started, reducing visibility significantly. The conditions meant the medical helicopter would not have been able to fly, so the session was stopped.
